General Weather Overview

The city of Taitung is characterised by a warm and humid climate throughout the year, which is typical for the subtropical zone. Average annual temperatures fluctuate within a comfortable range: the coolest months, such as January, have an average temperature of around 14.2°C, while in the warm summer months, for example in July, the average temperature reaches approximately 24.1°C. Extreme temperatures are rare here, making the weather generally mild and predictable.

In Taitung, one can distinguish between warmer and cooler seasons, yet no drastic temperature fluctuations are observed. The summer months, roughly from May to September, are the warmest, with average maximum temperatures reaching 24-27°C. Winter, from December to February, brings cooler weather with average temperatures around 14-18°C. A distinctive feature of the local climate is high humidity and a significant number of days with precipitation year-round. Although the total monthly rainfall in millimetres is low (from 5 to 13 mm), the number of "wet days" remains consistently high, often ranging from 21 to 28 days per month. This indicates frequent, but likely not very intense rains or drizzle, supporting the lush vegetation of the region.

Temperature

The climate in Taitung is characterised by noticeable seasonal temperature variations, offering comfortable conditions for visiting at different times of the year. The coldest month is usually January, when the average air temperature is around 14.2°C. At night, the thermometer can drop to 11.4°C, and during the day rise to a pleasant 17.0°C. Conversely, the peak heat occurs in July, with an average temperature of 24.1°C. During this period, daytime highs reach 27.1°C, and nighttime temperatures hover around 21.2°C. Thus, the annual range of average temperatures is about 10 degrees, indicating relatively mild transitions between seasons.

The summer months in Taitung, from June to August, are distinguished by consistently warm weather. Average daytime temperatures during this period confidently stay in the range of 26.5°C to 27.1°C, and nights remain warm, with temperatures not falling below 21°C. Such weather feels pleasantly warm, conducive to outdoor activities, though it is worth noting that data on frequent wet days may indicate increased humidity during this period. Extreme heat is not characteristic for the region.

Winter in Taitung, covering the period from December to February, passes mildly and without severe cold. Average temperatures in these months range from 14.2°C to 15.5°C. Nighttime lows drop to 11.4°C - 12.9°C, and daytime highs reach 17.0°C - 18.2°C, making the weather quite comfortable for walking. Throughout the year, Taitung observes moderate diurnal temperature fluctuations; the difference between day and night readings is usually about 5-6 degrees Celsius. This ensures a relatively even temperature background throughout the day, without sharp changes.

Precipitation

In the city of Taitung, precipitation falls quite evenly throughout the year, and there is no clearly defined dry season here. The amount of rainfall is relatively small, but rainy days occur very frequently in almost every month. This suggests that Taitung is characterised by frequent, but as a rule, light rains or drizzle.

The highest amount of precipitation usually falls in August, when an average of about 13 mm falls, with approximately 25 rainy days recorded. May (11 mm, 28 rainy days) and October (11 mm, 22 rainy days) can also be considered relatively wet. The "driest" months, if one can say so with such a high frequency of rain, are November and December, when only 5 mm of precipitation falls, yet even in these months, there are 22-25 days with precipitation.

Thus, when planning a trip to Taitung, it is worth being prepared for a high probability of rain at practically any time of the year. Although the total amount of precipitation is small, it rains often. For example, in January and May, there can be up to 28 rainy days, and in July and September, despite slightly less precipitation, about 21 days with rain are still expected. Snowfall is uncharacteristic for Taitung, given the average monthly temperatures.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Taitung, it is important to consider that the weather here is characterised by a high probability of precipitation almost year-round, although its intensity may be low. The average annual number of "wet days" is quite significant, so regardless of the season, your suitcase must contain a light waterproof jacket or raincoat, as well as a compact umbrella. The temperature regime in Taitung is quite mild: average temperatures range from 14-15°C in the winter months (December-February) to 23-24°C in the summer (June-August). In this regard, the principle of layering in clothing will be very useful, allowing you to feel comfortable with weather changes throughout the day.

In the summer months (June-August), when the maximum temperature can reach 26-27°C, preference should be given to light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as t-shirts, shorts, and sundresses. Do not forget sunscreen with high SPF, a hat, and sunglasses for sun protection. For the cooler winter months (December-February), when the minimum temperature can drop to 11-13°C, especially in the evenings and mornings, warmer items will be needed: sweaters, a fleece jacket, a light but warm coat, and trousers. In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather is usually mild and pleasant but changeable, so a combination of t-shirts, long-sleeved tops, and a light jacket or cardigan would be the most successful choice. And, of course, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity at any time of the year, as Taiwan offers many opportunities for hiking and exploration.
