History & Facts

The history of this area is full of unexpected twists. Between the 1930s and 1960s, the area where Glebelands Park now stands was used as an unregulated landfill. Household and industrial waste, including chemicals, were dumped here, with almost no documentation kept on the composition of the waste.

Interestingly, due to years of accumulated waste, the ground level was raised by about three meters. This turned the site into a kind of industrial heritage that was eventually reclaimed and hidden under a layer of soil and thick grass, becoming a pleasant place for relaxation.

A new chapter in the park's history began in the 1960s when the city authorities decided to use the territory for public needs. The northern part was allocated for allotments, while the rest of the space became a zone for sports and recreation. The nearby River Usk also has historical value as a famous spot for salmon and trout fishing.

Time Needed

For a standard visit to Glebelands Park, 1–2 hours is usually enough. This time is quite sufficient to take a leisurely stroll along the paths, have a small picnic on the grass, and enjoy the views of the River Usk.

If you are interested in birdwatching or plan to walk along the entire shoreline exploring the local flora and fauna, it’s better to allow up to 3 hours for your visit. The park is an excellent place for a quick recharge in the middle of a busy sightseeing day.

Working Hours

One of the pleasant features of Glebelands Park is its accessibility. It is open to visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can come here on Monday, Saturday, or any other day of the week at your convenience.

Despite the round-the-clock schedule, we recommend checking the official website or local information portals before your visit in case of special events or temporary restrictions. Remember that at night, the park looks completely different, taking on a special, mysterious atmosphere.
