One of the park's key features is its proximity to the Wensum Nature Reserve. The famous Marriott's Way walking and cycling trail passes through its territory, making the park an important hub for long-distance walkers. It features modern play areas for children and sports facilities open to everyone.

Currently, Sloughbottom Park is undergoing a major transformation. Thanks to government support, by autumn 2027, it will feature renovated pavilions, inclusive play spaces, and modern sports hubs. The design of the new zones is inspired by local ecology, so visitors will soon see elements reminiscent of the region's insects and birds.

Special attention is given to children. As part of the ongoing update, unique play spaces are being created. For those who value tranquility, the park has plenty of open green lawns suitable for picnics or reading in the shade of trees. Thanks to an inclusive approach, new areas are being designed to be accessible and engaging for children of all physical abilities, including sensory zones and specialized swings.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked to the social changes of the early 20th century. Sloughbottom Park was established in the 1920s as part of an ambitious development project for the Mile Cross area. This was during the implementation of the “Homes for Heroes” program, aimed at providing decent housing for veterans of the First World War.

The designers of the district understood the importance of outdoor recreation, so the park was originally planned as the “lungs” of the new residential development. For decades, it has served as a central hub for local residents, gradually adding new sports and leisure facilities.

A significant milestone in its recent history was the early 2000s, when a modern skate park was opened. This transformed the atmosphere of the site, making it popular with young people and extreme sports enthusiasts. Today, the park is undergoing another phase of large-scale reconstruction, maintaining its role as an important historical and social space in the city.

Time Needed

For a standard visit to explore the grounds, relax on the grass, or visit the playground, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This time is enough to leisurely walk along the main paths and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

If you plan to combine your visit with a walk through the neighboring Wensum Nature Reserve or decide on a longer bike ride along Marriott's Way, you should allow about 2–3 hours. Once the major reconstruction is completed in 2027, there will be even more interactive zones to keep you there longer.

Working Hours

Sloughbottom Park is welcomingly open to visitors 24 hours a day. You can come here for an early morning jog, spend the whole day with your family, or take a quiet walk at sunset — access to the grounds is not restricted by time on any day of the week.

The operating schedule is as follows:

  • Monday — Sunday: 24 hours.
This schedule makes the park extremely convenient for spontaneous visits and long walks at any time of the year.
