This is more than just a shop; it’s a true cultural institution specializing in premium cookies and chocolates. Only high-quality ingredients are used in the process: select macadamia nuts and the famous 100% pure coffee from the slopes of the Kona and Kaʻu volcanoes. Every treat is a tribute to Hawaiian tradition and craftsmanship.

Since its inception in 1977, this small family business has evolved into a world-renowned brand. Travelers from around the globe come here not just for the flavor, but for the aesthetic: the company's products are famous for their unique, artistically designed packaging, making them the perfect gift.

What to Do

The highlight of any visit is the chance to peek behind the scenes of confectionery art. Through large panoramic windows, visitors can watch the production process: from the shaping of the famous shortbread cookies to the hand-decoration of chocolates. It is a captivating sight for both children and adults.

In the retail store, be sure to look out for the exclusive "Hawaiian Da-Kines" line. Here, you'll find bold culinary experiments: chocolate coatings on local delicacies such as dried squid or kakimochi (rice crackers). This sweet and savory combination is a truly Hawaiian experience that is hard to find anywhere else.

Be sure to try the signature milk chocolate-dipped macadamia nut shortbread. An important tip: some products are available only at this factory store. Due to their delicate texture and short shelf life, they are not suitable for long-distance shipping, making your visit to Hilo a truly unique opportunity to taste them.

Getting There

Finding the famous factory is easy: it is located in the heart of Hilo at 585 Hinano Street. One of the location's key features is its incredible proximity to transport hubs—the drive from Hilo International Airport (ITO) takes only about five minutes by car.

For getting around the city, it is recommended that tourists use a rental car, which is the most convenient way to explore Hawaii. If you don't plan on driving, you can use taxis or popular ride-sharing services. The trip from the downtown areas to the shop is also short and comfortable.

Public transport in this area is limited, so most travelers prefer private vehicles or taxis to avoid being tied to a schedule and to easily carry away numerous boxes of souvenirs.

History & Facts

The history of this sweet kingdom began in 1977, when Allan Ikawa and his wife, Irma, decided to invest all their savings into their dream of creating the best candies in Hawaii. Initially, it was a modest wholesale operation run out of a warehouse. The founder worked 16 hours a day, personally overseeing every stage of the macadamia nut chocolate production.

The path to global recognition wasn't easy; the company weathered several financial crises. A turning point came in the mid-1980s after a chance meeting with the families of professional golfers who appreciated the product quality. It was then that the brand became an essential omiyage (a traditional souvenir gift) for all island visitors.

The factory took on its current form in the late '90s when it moved to Hinano Street. In 2013, the company expanded beyond the Big Island, opening a branch on Oahu, and in 2021, it was officially inducted into the Hawaii Small Business Hall of Fame. Despite its global success, Big Island Candies remains true to its roots, keeping its production right here in Hilo.

Time Needed

To leisurely browse the assortment, watch the artisans through the glass, and choose gifts for loved ones, most visitors need about 1 to 1.5 hours. This is usually enough time for a complete experience.

If you are a true gourmet or plan to study the packaging and creation of exclusive collections in detail, we recommend allowing about 2 hours. Keep in mind that during holiday periods, the store can be busier than usual, which may slightly increase your visit time.

Working Hours

The factory store welcomes guests daily, including weekends. Doors are open from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, making it easy to plan a visit either in the morning or afternoon.

Please note that the production process can only be viewed through the observation windows on weekdays (Monday through Friday) from 9:00 AM to 3:45 PM. The factory workshop schedule may change on public holidays.
