How to get to Ironwood

Located on the picturesque Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Ironwood attracts travellers with its rugged northern beauty and its status as the capital of "Big Snow Country". When planning a trip to Ironwood, be prepared to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the true American North, where mining history intertwines with opportunities for active leisure. You can reach this cosy city in various ways: by a direct regional flight, by bus, or by embarking on an exciting road trip through forests and lakes.

The fastest way to reach the destination is to take a flight to the local Gogebic-Iron County Airport (IWD), which, despite its small size, receives regular commercial flights from major hubs. This is the optimal choice for those who wish to save time and land directly within the city limits.

Alternatively, travellers often choose to fly into airports in neighbouring cities, such as Rhinelander (RHI) or Duluth (DLH), located within a radius of 100–150 km. The airport in the city of Hancock (CMX) can also serve as a convenient arrival point, from where it is easy to continue the journey by rental car.

There is no direct railway connection to the city, and there are no regular passenger train stations in the immediate vicinity, including Rhinelander and Duluth. The nearest major Amtrak railway hubs are located significantly further south, for example, in Milwaukee or Minneapolis.

For this reason, travelling by train is not the most practical option for visiting Ironwood, unless you are planning a large-scale tour across the USA with long transfers to a bus or rental car to cover the final few hundred kilometres.

For tourists who prefer ground public transport, there is convenient bus service connecting with neighbouring regions. A popular option is the route from the city of Duluth: the bus covers the distance of 176 km in approximately 2.5 hours.

A bus trip allows you to enjoy views of the northern forests without the need to drive yourself. It is a reliable method to reach your destination, especially during the winter season when road conditions can be challenging.

A car remains the most flexible means of transport around the region. The drive from the city of Rhinelander will take only about 1.5 hours (129 km), while the road from Hancock will take around 2 hours (177 km). The highways here are scenic and usually not congested with traffic.

The route from the city of Duluth is also in demand: you will have to drive about 174 km, which takes just over two hours. Travelling by car or taxi allows you to make stops at the most beautiful spots and plan your schedule independently.

To ensure your journey to Ironwood is as comfortable as possible, it is worth considering the specifics of this northern region in advance. Here are a few practical recommendations for preparing for your trip.

1. Seasonal Clothing. Winters here are very snowy and cold, so a high-quality warm jacket and waterproof footwear are mandatory. In summer, the weather is pleasant, but evenings can be cool — bring a warm sweater.
2. Transport. Public transport within the city is not widely developed. It is strongly recommended to rent a car to freely visit natural attractions and waterfalls in the surrounding area.
