The cinema's main feature is its commitment to ultimate viewer comfort. Instead of standard seating, the theaters are equipped with luxurious power recliners, allowing you to watch movies in a near-home-like setting. Additionally, it is one of the few places in the area featuring a full bar with a selection of beer and wine, making it a popular choice for both families and adult groups.

The 7,000-square-foot facility is equipped with a modern acoustic system and high-quality screens. Despite being a compact regional cinema, its level of service and sound quality rivals that of large metropolitan multiplexes. Oak Harbor Cinemas is more than just a screen and a projector; it is a vital part of Whidbey Island's cultural fabric, preserving a cozy atmosphere for all its guests.

What to Do

At Oak Harbor Cinemas, guests can expect much more than just the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Thanks to the thoughtful layout of the auditoriums with stadium-style seating and powerful soundproofing, you can fully immerse yourself in the film's atmosphere. Comfort seekers will appreciate the ability to order drinks from the bar and settle into plush, leather power recliners.

Beyond the standard repertoire, the cinema is actively involved with the community. Unique events are held regularly, ranging from video game tournaments (such as Super Mario Kart) on the giant screen to karaoke nights where the whole audience sings along to hits from famous musicals. Once a month, special "sensory-friendly" screenings are organized with lower sound levels and soft lighting, making cinema accessible to everyone.

If you are looking for a venue for a special occasion, the cinema offers theater rentals for private parties. This is a great idea for birthdays or corporate events, where you can watch your favorite movie or host a themed cosplay night. The combination of classic cinematic traditions and modern entertainment makes this place a must-visit during your stay in the city.

History & Facts

The history of Oak Harbor Cinemas began on January 23, 1981, when it opened under the name Plaza Cinema 2. It was founded by John Solin, who decided to bring to life an idea from his real estate colleagues to create a modern cinema in the growing city. The first films shown on its screens were "The Mirror Crack'd" and "The Private Eyes."

In May 1983, a third auditorium was added to the existing two, and the venue was renamed Plaza Cinemas. Interestingly, this location became the spiritual successor to the old Oak Harbor Theater that had operated since the 1920s, thus preserving a long tradition of film screenings on the island. For decades, the cinema remained a family business or was managed by regional chains.

A new chapter began in 2019 when the building returned to the control of Solin and his partner, Michel Gahard. Despite the pandemic, a major renovation was carried out, completely updating the interior and equipment. In 2025, the business was acquired by a local couple, the Stuckis, who aimed to make the cinema not just a place to watch movies, but a vital center for the local community's cultural life.

Time Needed

For a standard visit to Oak Harbor Cinemas, you should plan for about 2–3 hours. This is plenty of time to choose your tickets and snacks at the bar without rushing and to enjoy a full-length new release.

If you plan to attend one of the themed nights, karaoke, or participate in a big-screen gaming tournament, your stay may be longer. The cozy atmosphere and the presence of a bar make it a great place to linger after the show to discuss the film with friends.

Working Hours

The cinema's operating hours are generally tied to the screening schedule. Monday and Tuesday are typically closed. From Wednesday to Sunday, the venue is open to visitors from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Since movie start times can change depending on premieres and special events, it is highly recommended to check the current schedule on the cinema's official website before your visit.
