What to Do

The main reason to visit Jumbo Burrito is the chance to create your own culinary masterpiece. You have full control over the assembly of your burrito, taco, or salad bowl, choosing from various meats, fresh vegetables, signature sauces, and spices. The chefs prepare everything right in front of you, ensuring the freshness of every ingredient.

Be sure to try the signature burrito—its size truly justifies the name "Jumbo." It's an excellent choice for a hearty lunch, especially if you're planning a long walk in the area or some outdoor activities. Generous portions have become the restaurant's calling card, and many travelers prefer to share one dish between two people.

In addition to tasting the food, you can feel the spirit of a true local community. The family atmosphere encourages conversation: staff often chat with guests, creating a cozy, home-like feeling. It’s the perfect spot to take a break on the road, relax in the simple, laid-back setting of a "roadside" restaurant, and watch the life of Oak Harbor go by.

Getting There

Jumbo Burrito is located at 31780 State Rte 20, right on the island's main highway. This location makes it incredibly convenient for motorists traveling through Whidbey Island. If you're coming from the mainland, your route will most likely take you across the scenic Deception Pass Bridge or via the ferry from Mukilteo.

For those who prefer public transport, the situation is slightly more complex but manageable. The island is served by Island Transit buses. The nearest stop is in the city center, from which you can reach the restaurant by taxi or Uber in 5–10 minutes. A walk from the center is also possible but will take considerably longer.

The most comfortable option for tourists remains renting a car. The restaurant provides its own parking, which is typical for roadside establishments in Washington State. If you're cycling along the island's popular routes, Jumbo Burrito makes an excellent pit stop to refuel before continuing your journey.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 2014 with a small food truck. Its founder, Eli Loera Sr., moved with his family from Los Angeles in search of new opportunities. Thanks to the incredible hard work of Eli—whom his loved ones described as a true "hustler"—the mobile kitchen transformed into a full-fledged brick-and-mortar restaurant on Highway 20 just seven months after starting.

Sadly, the founder passed away in late 2022, and his son, Eli Loera Jr., took over the family business. Despite the loss, the family continued to grow the project, preserving the same atmosphere of hospitality and authentic recipes brought from California. The restaurant has become an important part of the community, where every guest is welcomed like an old friend.

In early 2024, the establishment faced a major challenge: a severe storm caused a pipe to burst, leading to extensive flooding. The equipment and interior were heavily damaged, and Jumbo Burrito had to close for three and a half months. However, with the support of local residents and through insurance, the Loera family was able to restore the restaurant, proving that their business is not just about food, but a story of perseverance and love for their craft.

Today, Eli's parents and four sisters work here, maintaining the traditions of the family business. This restaurant is a shining example of how one person's small dream can grow into an iconic spot for an entire city.

Time Needed

A visit to Jumbo Burrito usually doesn't take much time, as the format is focused on fast, high-quality service. On average, 30 to 45 minutes is enough for guests to order and enjoy their meal.

Keep in mind that during peak hours (lunchtime), there might be a short queue, adding about 10–15 minutes to your visit. However, the assembly process is fine-tuned to perfection, so the wait is rarely tedious. It’s an ideal place for a quick stop during a longer journey across the island.
