Located in the state of California, this bar offers guests a unique opportunity to enjoy a glass of fine wine or champagne on a spacious terrace that literally hangs over the sparkling blue water. The interior spans two levels, combining tasting areas, a retail shop, and cozy event spaces, making it a magnet for aesthetes and connoisseurs of quality leisure.

The main feature of The Idle Hour is its combination of a premium wine program—recognized with the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2024—and accessibility. What to Do

A visit to The Idle Hour is not just a tasting, but a complete sensory experience. Guests can order wine or sparkling wine flights or choose a bottle from the extensive collection. An eclectic menu is offered to accompany the drinks, ranging from crispy flatbreads and shrimp cocktails to gourmet cheese and meat (charcuterie) boards, as well as famous Abdallah chocolates.

Special attention should be paid to the cultural program. Every Friday and Saturday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, live music by pianist Chris Deal fills the lounge. Brunches are served on Sundays, and Happy Hours run on weekdays, offering excellent drinks at special prices. This is the perfect time to grab a seat on the balcony and prepare for the main event—the sunset over the lake.

If you want to take a piece of Tahoe home with you, stop by the retail area featuring exclusive items. Please note that tables are not reserved here—the rule is "first-come, first-served," so for a guaranteed spot on the terrace, it is best to arrive early, especially during peak season.

Getting There

Finding The Idle Hour is quite easy: it is located at 3351 Lake Tahoe Blvd Suite 6, right on the main road of South Lake Tahoe that runs along the shore. If you are traveling by car, the drive from Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) takes about an hour via US-50. Visitor parking is available at the building.

For those who prefer public transportation, the city offers local bus routes and taxi or Uber services. Thanks to its prime waterfront location, the bar is also an easy walk from nearby hotels and restaurants, such as the popular Boathouse On The Pier. In the summer, many tourists prefer to arrive by bicycle while enjoying the lake breeze.

History & Facts

The history of this cozy spot began with the long-held dream of Karen Walsh, a local resident who has lived in South Lake Tahoe for over 25 years. She always wanted to open a wine bar right on the lakefront. The name is symbolic: The Idle Hour was the name of an ice cream shop that Karen's mother named after winning a local contest.

Together with her partner Steve Dunham, Karen transformed an ordinary waterfront office building into a stylish two-story oasis for relaxation. The owners are experienced entrepreneurs well-known in the region for their projects, including the Tahoe Bike Company and the Safari Rose cruise yacht, so attention to detail and guest comfort are top priorities at The Idle Hour.

Although the establishment opened relatively recently, it has already gained professional recognition. In 2024, the bar was honored with the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its outstanding wine list, confirming its status as one of the best gastronomic destinations on the coast.

Time Needed

When planning your visit to The Idle Hour, set aside approximately 1–3 hours. This is plenty of time to leisurely enjoy a wine tasting flight, sample signature appetizers, and admire the panoramic lake views. If you plan to visit for sunset, we recommend arriving early to secure the best seats on the terrace.

For those who wish to combine their tasting with live music on weekends or Sunday brunch, your visit may last longer. The atmosphere of the establishment encourages prolonged contemplation and relaxed conversation, so many guests prefer to spend the entire evening here.

Working Hours

The venue welcomes guests daily according to the following schedule: Monday through Saturday, The Idle Hour is open from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and on Sundays, the doors open a bit earlier at 11:00 AM (specifically for brunch), with the bar operating until 8:00 PM.
