The palace building impresses with its monumentality: it is built on a massive foundation and resembles an impregnable fortress. The total area of the territory is about 2 hectares, which houses not only ceremonial halls but also offices, a kitchen, and staff quarters. The palace facade faces the sea, offering a view of the old pier, which once emphasized the status and significance of this location.

For tourists, the palace is primarily interesting as a symbol of former greatness and a center of colonial power. Here you can see a striking contrast between the luxurious life of high-ranking officials and the harsh conditions of the rest of the island at that time. Today, the site is part of a complex of historical relics and maintains a high rating among visitors thanks to its authentic atmosphere and excellent preservation.

What to Do

The main reason to visit is the opportunity to touch living history. Visitors can freely stroll through the halls and offices where fateful decisions were once made. The architecture of the building deserves special attention: you will see how the colonial style was adapted to local conditions, turning a residential house into a protected outpost with high ceilings and thick walls.

Guided tours are often held inside the palace, during which guides share stories about the governors' daily lives and the administrative system of the past. You will be able to see displays of interior items, old documents, and photographs that vividly illustrate the historical path of the region. A walk through the garden and an inspection of the outbuildings, including the ancient kitchen, leave a lasting impression.

Many tourists prefer to combine a visit to the palace with other sites of the prison complex, such as the "French Tiger Cages" or the Con Dao Museum. This is also a great opportunity for a photo session: the view from the palace grounds over the coast and the pier is considered one of the best in the town. After exploring the historical halls, you can simply relax in the shade of the trees, enjoying the quiet of this place.

Getting There

The historical monument is conveniently located in the heart of Con Son town on Con Dao island, directly opposite the famous Pier 914. If you are already in the central part of town, the walk will take no more than 5–10 minutes, allowing you to enjoy ocean views along the way.

For those arriving from other parts of the island or from Con Son Airport, the best option would be to rent a motorbike or take a taxi. Most tourists arrive in Vietnam via Ho Chi Minh City, from where regular flights fly to the island or high-speed ferries operate (the journey by water takes between 5 and 7 hours).

History & Facts

Construction of this monumental building began in 1862, almost simultaneously with the founding of the notorious prison. For over a hundred years, the palace served as the residence for 53 generations of island administrators: among them were 39 French governors and 14 Vietnamese appointees. During the colonial era, this site was known as the "Ong Lon" plantation.

The palace was not just a residential house, but also a powerful administrative center where key judicial and military decisions were made. It was here in 1945 and 1975 that important events occurred related to the formation of the revolutionary government on the archipelago. The building is literally steeped in the history of the changes the region has undergone over the past century and a half.

In 1979, the complex was officially recognized as a national relic, and in 2012, the government granted it the status of a Special National Monument. Today, it is carefully preserved as a site of exceptional historical, cultural, and architectural value, clearly demonstrating the evolution of power and governance in this part of the country.

Time Needed

For a thoughtful exploration of the building itself and the surrounding grounds, 1–2 hours is sufficient for most travelers. This time is enough to study architectural details, see the inner halls, and take memorable photos against the colonial facades.

If you plan to visit the palace as part of a comprehensive tour of the island's five key historical sites (including the prison camps and the museum), we recommend setting aside 3 to 4 hours. This approach will allow you to immerse yourself in the context without rushing and not miss important details of the exhibition.

Working Hours

You can visit this site daily, though it is worth noting the midday break. The palace is open to tourists in the morning from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and in the afternoon from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM. A standard ticket costs 50,000 VND and usually provides access to several historical attractions in the complex at once, making the visit very convenient.
