Jalalabad
Current Weather
Overview
Jalalabad, located in eastern Afghanistan, is characterized by an arid subtropical climate. Situated at an altitude of approximately 580 meters above sea level in Nangarhar Province, the city experiences sharp seasonal contrasts. Travelers can expect long, sweltering summers and relatively short but cool winters with mostly clear skies.
The general weather pattern in the region is desert-like, with annual temperatures ranging from a bracing +1°C to an extreme +38°C. Seasonality is quite distinct: most precipitation falls during the winter and spring, while the summer months remain virtually dry, creating conditions of stable and intense heat.
Temperature
The temperature regime in Jalalabad is marked by pronounced seasonality and significant diurnal fluctuations. The coldest months are January and December, when nighttime lows average around +3°C, with occasional frosts reaching -5°C in certain years. However, during the day, the winter sun often warms the air to a comfortable +12...+15°C.
The summer period brings true dry heat to the city. In July and August, average daily highs regularly reach +35°C, often exceeding the +38°C mark. Nights during this time remain warm, at around +24...+25°C. The spring months, especially March and April, offer a pleasant gradual warming from a moderate +15°C to a warmer +25°C, making this one of the best times to visit.

Precipitation
Precipitation in Jalalabad is distributed very unevenly, which is typical for the arid regions of Afghanistan. The city receives about 220 mm of precipitation annually, with most of it occurring in the first half of the year. Spring is considered the wettest period: March and April see the highest amount of moisture, and the number of rainy days can reach 10–11 per month.
Summer in the city is a time of absolute drought. From June to September, rain is extremely rare, and the skies remain cloudless. Humidity stays at a minimum through autumn, and only toward the end of the year, in November and December, does the probability of short-term precipitation gradually increase, marking the transition to the winter climatic cycle.

Packing Tips
When planning your wardrobe for a trip to Jalalabad, it is important to consider the significant temperature fluctuations. For a winter visit (December–February), warm clothing is essential: sweaters, coats, and heavy trousers, as nights in Afghanistan can be cold. In spring and autumn, a layering approach is most practical, allowing you to easily adapt as the air warms up quickly during the day.
If your trip falls in the summer, choose light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics in light colors. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF—the sun is extremely intense in desert areas. In any season, you will need comfortable closed-toe shoes to protect against dust, as well as a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated in the dry climate.
