How to get to El Calafate

Alternatively, you can consider flying to neighboring cities, such as Río Gallegos or the Chilean Puerto Natales, located 155 km away. However, it is worth remembering that such a route will require additional time for ground transfer to your final destination.

Currently, there is no direct railway line to El Calafate, as the complex terrain of Patagonia and vast distances make this mode of transport uncommon here. There are no railway stations in the city itself or its vicinity.

Traveling by car allows you to plan your schedule independently and stop at the most beautiful spots for photo sessions. The drive from Río Gallegos will take about 3.5 hours on a paved highway, which is one of the fastest ground options.

The route from Chilean Puerto Natales, covering about 270 km, will require approximately 3.6 hours of driving, not counting time for border control. The path from Punta Arenas is longer — about 6.2 hours, but it opens up the true wild Patagonia to travelers.
