The complex occupies two magnificently restored historic mansions — Casa Arias Rengel and Casa Leguizamón. Instead of traditional dusty display cases, visitors are greeted by interactive technologies, digital installations, and a living narrative of the lives of "Salteños" over four centuries.

This is not just a museum, but a multifunctional space including exhibition halls, a design center, and a unique children's research sector. Here, every exhibit invites dialogue, turning the study of history into an exciting adventure for the whole family.

What to Do

In this museum, you are not just an observer, but an active participant. Particular attention should be paid to the interactive displays: using touchscreens and digital maps, you can trace the migration routes of ancestors or learn the history of old family names. The halls are divided by theme—from the bustle of the city on the ground floor to intimate stories and carnival traditions on the upper floor.

For little travelers, there is the Exploratorio Infantil—a children's center where learning turns into play. Children can "cook" traditional dishes in a virtual kitchen, create music on a giant quena (a traditional flute), or try on costumes from different eras. This space allows them to literally touch the province's culture through tactile and visual experiences.

Be sure to stop by the halls dedicated to social transformations and holidays, such as "El Milagro." The use of modern media formats helps you feel the atmosphere of Argentine celebrations and understand how the unique spirit of Salta's residents was formed.

Getting There

Explora Salta Museum Complex is located in the heart of the historic city center at La Florida 20. Thanks to its central location, it is easily accessible on foot from the main square or by public transport.

If you prefer comfort, you can use local taxis or mobile ride-hailing apps—a trip from anywhere in the center will take only a few minutes. For those arriving from Governor Horacio Guzmán International Airport, the journey by car or taxi takes about 15–20 minutes.

Salta's urban transport system also makes it convenient to reach the museum by bus, with routes passing through the central blocks. Its proximity to main tourist paths makes the complex a must-visit point on any traveler's itinerary.

History & Facts

The walls of this complex hold the memory of centuries of history. Casa Arias Rengel was built in the mid-18th century and belonged to an influential family of encomenderos. This building is a magnificent monument of the colonial era, which was recognized as a site of national importance in 1969.

The second building, Casa Leguizamón, dates back to around 1808 and is an exquisite example of post-colonial architecture. For a long time, it remained closed to the public, and only a large-scale restoration allowed the old manor to be transformed into part of the modern museum.

The opening of the unified museum space in 2022 was a major milestone for the region's culture. The project combined the efforts of historians from the University of Salta (UNSA-CONICET) and cutting-edge digital technologies to breathe new life into the ancient halls and make history accessible to every generation.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the exhibits and try out the interactive installations, we recommend planning for about 2–3 hours. This is enough time to walk through both historic buildings and explore the thematic halls.

If you are planning a visit with children, it is worth setting aside 3 to 4 hours. The Exploratorio Infantil (Children's Research Center) is so engaging that young visitors often don't want to leave the play areas, immersing themselves in the process of creating music or virtual cooking.

Working Hours

The museum complex is open to the public most of the week, but please take note of the closing day:

  • Saturday – Sunday: 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM
