The heart of the exposition is the priceless heritage the master bequeathed to his historical homeland — Armenia. Over 600 works are on display, from his famous layered collages and delicate drawings to incredible installations and personal belongings. A special atmosphere is created by recreated memorial rooms moved from his home in Tbilisi, which let visitors sense Parajanov's daily life and inspiration.

The museum is recognized as one of the most visited and beloved places in the capital. It's a space where cinema meets visual art, and every object tells its own amazing story. Cultural events are regularly held here, making the museum a vibrant hub for creative people from all over the world.

What to Do

The main reason to visit this museum is the chance to explore a unique collection consisting of hundreds of the master's works. You will see collages, graphics, and installations where folk motifs, biblical themes, and the artist's boundless imagination intertwine. Be sure to visit the memorial rooms: the interiors of Parajanov’s Tbilisi home have been recreated here with striking accuracy, creating a sense of being there in person.

Visitors are encouraged to look at materials dedicated to the director's legendary films, such as "The Color of Pomegranates" and "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors". This will help you better understand his unique cinematic language and contribution to world art. Besides the permanent collection, the museum often hosts temporary exhibitions that travel to major cities worldwide, from Paris to Tokyo.

After immersing yourself in the world of art, take a stroll through the Dzoragyugh neighborhood itself. Its traditional architecture and cozy streets are perfect for reflecting on what you've seen and taking atmospheric photos against the backdrop of old Yerevan.

Getting There

The museum is located in the heart of Yerevan at 15-16 Sergey Parajanov Street (Dzoragyugh district). Thanks to its central location, it is easily reachable on foot from Republic Square or the famous Cascade complex — a walk that takes about 15–20 minutes and allows you to enjoy the architecture of the old city.

If you prefer public transport, buses and minibuses going to the "Dzoragyugh" or "Cascade" stops are suitable. You can also use taxi services (such as Yandex Go or GG) — a trip from the center takes no more than 5–10 minutes and costs approximately 500–1000 drams.

For those traveling by car, parking is available near the museum complex. A walk through the Dzoragyugh ethnographic district itself, with its traditional houses, will be a pleasant addition to your museum visit.

History & Facts

The history of this remarkable place began in 1988 when a close friend of the director, photographer Zaven Sarkisyan, organized the first exhibition of Parajanov’s work in Yerevan. The exhibition's success and the master’s presence inspired authorities to create a personal museum. Sergei Parajanov himself chose the site for his future home — an unfinished building in the colorful Dzoragyugh district, turning down more formal options in the city center.

Unfortunately, a devastating earthquake in 1988 slowed construction, and the museum only opened its doors in 1991 — after the great director had passed away. Although Sergei Parajanov was born in Tbilisi and worked extensively in Kyiv, he bequeathed his entire artistic legacy to Armenia, making this museum the primary guardian of his creative spirit.

Sergei Parajanov went down in history as a genius of poetic cinema and the creator of masterpieces like "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" and "The Color of Pomegranates". The museum in Yerevan became more than just a storage of items; it is a living embodiment of his fantastic world, housing unique works with no parallel in world art. Today, the collection includes hundreds of pieces, each filled with deep symbolism and expression.

Time Needed

To explore all the halls without rushing and immerse yourself in the master’s creative atmosphere, an average visitor will need about 1.5–2 hours. This is enough time to carefully examine the details of the collages, study the installations, and soak in the atmosphere of the memorial rooms.

If you plan to dive deep into archival documents and photographs or catch one of the temporary exhibitions frequently held at the museum, your visit may take longer. We also recommend leaving some time for a walk through the courtyard and the surrounding neighborhood for beautiful photos.
