The Gidley

About

Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a sophisticated underground establishment in the heart of the metropolis. The Gidley is an elegant steakhouse and cocktail bar located in an authentic basement on King Street, where "old school" classic style meets modern Australian hospitality. It is a place where dim lighting, dark wood finishes, and plush leather sofas create the feeling of a private men’s club or a cozy living room in a wealthy mansion.

The main architectural "highlight" of the venue is the absence of a traditional bar counter. Instead, it uses an open workspace built into the wall, allowing bartenders to communicate directly with guests, creating an atmosphere of a home reception. If you are looking for a place where Sydney reveals its most stylish and gastronomic side, this restaurant is the perfect choice.

As part of the renowned Liquid & Larder group, the establishment is famous for its impeccable service and attention to detail. Australia is proud of its meat traditions, and here they are elevated to an absolute, making the restaurant a magnet for true gourmets and connoisseurs of quality drinks.

What to Do

The main reason to come here is, undoubtedly, the meat. Be sure to try the Riverine Black Angus premium beef steaks. They offer a rare cut for Australia—the spinalis steak, the juiciest and most tender part of the rib eye cap—as well as impressive portions of prime rib served thinly sliced. For a side dish, local connoisseurs recommend ordering the signature truffle mac and cheese.

An equally important part of the experience is a visit to the lounge bar. Thanks to a pre-mixing and carbonation system, classic cocktails are served with masterful speed while maintaining a perfect balance of flavor. The absence of a bar counter barrier allows guests to watch the masters at work and receive drink recommendations in a most relaxed manner.

An evening at The Gidley is not just a dinner, but a complete social experience. The intimate setting makes it ideal for romantic dates, while the presence of private dining rooms allows for high-profile business meetings or intimate celebrations with close friends, accompanied by exquisite wines from the sommelier's extensive list.

Getting There

You can find this "hidden gem" in the heart of the city's central business district, on the corner of King Street and Elizabeth Street. The entrance is intentionally understated: you'll need to go down a dimly lit staircase leading to the basement of a historic building.

Getting here by public transport is very easy. The nearest Light Rail stations are Town Hall or QVB, which are no more than a 10-minute leisurely walk from the restaurant. If you are coming by train, head for Central Station or Town Hall.

For those who prefer walking, the route from the famous Sydney Opera House or the Harbour Bridge takes about 15–20 minutes through the picturesque streets of the city center. From other parts of the city, it is most convenient to take a taxi or order an Uber directly to 161 King Street.

History & Facts

The Gidley opened its doors in November 2019 as an ambitious project by renowned restaurateurs James Bradey and Warren Burns of the Liquid & Larder group. The concept was inspired by the world's best grill restaurants, with a focus on exceptional Australian meat quality and an exclusive club atmosphere.

One of the most talked-about features of the project is the innovative bar design. Jono Carr, the group’s bar manager, decided to forgo the traditional bar counter to blur the lines between staff and guests. This allowed for an open "galley-style" kitchen space where cocktail preparation becomes a personalized show right before the guests' eyes.

In its few years of operation, the establishment has firmly established itself as a must-visit spot on the city's gastronomic map. Despite the modern technical equipment, the interiors and level of service harken back to the golden age of steakhouses, creating a unique bridge between historical traditions and Sydney's current trends.

Time Needed

To fully soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the cuisine, it is worth setting aside about 2–3 hours for your visit. This is enough time to enjoy an aperitif in the lounge area without rushing and then move on to the main dinner.

Typically, guests spend about 40 minutes exploring the cocktail list and light snacks at the bar, followed by a substantial meal. If you plan on tasting the signature steaks and desserts, it's better to have some extra time, as the preparation of premium cuts requires special attention from the chefs.

Working Hours

The establishment is open to visitors six days a week, providing opportunities for both late lunches and late-night cocktails:

  • Monday – Saturday: 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM;
  • Sunday: Closed.

Please note the details: the lounge area begins active operation from 5:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday (from noon on Fridays), and full dinners are served from 5:30 PM. A special lunch menu is available on Fridays from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
