What to Do

At Towradgi Beach Park, every guest will find something to enjoy. Younger visitors will love the play area with its iconic rocket slide, swings, and themed structures that spark the imagination and turn a regular walk into a maritime adventure. For adults, it's a perfect spot to host a picnic or BBQ in one of the specially equipped gazebos overlooking the ocean.

One of the top activities here is visiting the Towradgi Ocean Pool. Swimming in salt-water pools carved directly into the rocks offers a unique sense of safety and connection with nature. Active lifestyle enthusiasts can go for a bike ride or a run along the scenic coastal path, which stretches for miles and offers breathtaking views of the coastline.

For those who prefer a more contemplative experience, the park offers opportunities for fishing or exploring rock pools at low tide, where you can discover fascinating ocean creatures. Additionally, the beach’s proximity allows for surfing or simply soaking up the sun on the golden sand.

Getting There

The park is located at 2 Towradgi Rd, just 5 kilometers north of the city's CBD. The drive from the heart of Wollongong takes no more than 10–15 minutes. Ample parking is provided for visitors, making it extremely convenient for family trips.

If you prefer public transport, take the South Coast Line train to Towradgi Station. From the platform, the park is about a 10–12 minute walk. The park is also easily accessible by taxi or rideshare services from anywhere in the city.

History & Facts

The name of the park and the suburb has deep roots, originating from the Dharawal Aboriginal language. These lands hold memories of significant colonial events: it was here in March 1796 that famous explorers George Bass and Matthew Flinders attempted to land during their expedition on the tiny boat, Tom Thumb. They replenished their fresh water supplies near Towradgi Creek, an event commemorated today by a memorial plaque.

The maritime theme of the modern playground was chosen for a reason. In 1880, the British clipper Queen of Nations was wrecked near these shores. The remains of the ship resting beneath the water served as inspiration for the designers who created play structures shaped like ships and sea creatures, allowing children to learn history in an interactive way.

The transformation of the rural landscape into a modern suburb began in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railway. Today's Towradgi Beach Park is the result of systematic urban development. The latest major playground upgrade took place in 2011 under the direction of the Wollongong City Council, turning the park into one of the state's most decorated recreational spaces.

Time Needed

Tourists typically set aside 2 to 4 hours for a visit. This is usually enough time for kids to try all the attractions at the playground and for adults to enjoy a walk along the shore or a quick dip in the ocean pool.

If your goal is a full family outing with a BBQ, fishing, or a long bike ride along the coastal trail, you should plan for a full day (about 5–6 hours). The peaceful atmosphere and the presence of all necessary infrastructure make it easy to spend a long time here comfortably without leaving the park grounds.

Working Hours

Towradgi Beach Park is open to visitors 24/7 every day of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This allows guests maximum flexibility in planning their visit, whether it's for sunrise yoga or a quiet evening dinner by the sea.
