How to get to Independence

When planning a trip to Independence, you are choosing a journey to an important transport hub in southern Belize, often referred to as the "gateway" to the coast and islands. This lively settlement, bordering the village of Mango Creek, serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the region, accessible by domestic flight, car, or bus.

The fastest way to arrive is by using domestic airlines, as the town is served by its own Independence Airport (Savannah). Regular flights connect Independence with the country's international airport and other regions, offering passengers scenic views of the jungle and the coastline.

An alternative and popular option is flying to the neighboring town of Placencia, located just 5 km away across the lagoon. From there, travelers can reach their destination in minutes via water taxi. You may also consider airports in the towns of Dangriga and Punta Gorda if you are planning a combined itinerary.

Railway service in Belize is completely absent, so it is impossible to reach the town by train. Historical lines that existed previously have long been closed and are not used for passenger transport.

For overland travel, it is recommended to use the developed network of bus routes or rent a car. These are the main methods of movement between towns such as Dangriga or Placencia.

Bus service is the primary and most budget-friendly way to move around the region, connecting Independence with key settlements in the country. Regular trips run along the Southern Highway, making a stop in the town, which allows tourists to easily get here from the capital or neighboring districts.

Although there is often no strict online schedule, buses run quite frequently during daylight hours. Travelers can catch trips coming from towns such as Dangriga or Punta Gorda, enjoying a colorful ride on local "chicken buses".

Traveling by car allows you to enjoy freedom of movement and the beauty of tropical landscapes. If you are heading from the town of Dangriga, the trip will take about 1.1 hours, and the distance is approximately 77 km along a scenic road.

The route from the town of Placencia will require about 1.2 hours to cover 70 km, as the road skirts the lagoon. For those driving from the south, from the town of Punta Gorda, the 102 km journey will take approximately 1.4 hours. Major highways are usually in acceptable condition for comfortable driving.

3. Currency and Payment. The local currency is the Belize Dollar, but US Dollars are also widely accepted. In small shops and cafes, it is better to pay with cash, as card terminals are not available everywhere.
4. Insect Protection. Do not forget to pack insect repellent in your luggage. Mosquitoes and sandflies can be active, especially in the evening near the water.
5. Language. The official language is English, which simplifies communication, but locals often use Creole. A friendly attitude will help you find common ground with everyone.
6. Local Pace. Be prepared for a leisurely pace of life ("Belize time"). Service may be slower than you are used to, so relax and do not rush things.
