Designed by Chilean architect León Prieto Casanova, the cathedral is built in the Neo-Gothic style featuring characteristic pointed arches. The main highlight of the exterior is the impressive 45-meter tower, which is visible from almost any point in the city. For its contribution to the cityscape, the building was honored with the prestigious Obra Bicentenario award, highlighting its significance to the country's cultural heritage.

Inside, visitors are greeted by a spacious three-nave interior decorated with vibrant mosaics and stained glass. These artistic elements tell biblical stories, filling the space with soft, multicolored light. The cathedral is also the final resting place of Francisco Valdés Subercaseaux, the city's first bishop, whose memory is deeply revered by the locals.

What to Do

A visit to the cathedral offers guests a rare chance to enjoy the harmony of architecture and art. The first thing to look for is the unique stained glass by artist Juan Francisco Echenique. They serve as a kind of "glass book," visually narrating important spiritual events. As you walk through the three naves of the temple, you can appreciate the elegance of the pointed arches and the contrast of raw concrete with the warm wooden beams of the vaults.

For music lovers, a must-do is attending a liturgical service where the traditional organ is played. Its powerful and clear sound, combined with the hall's magnificent acoustics, creates an unforgettable atmosphere. It is also recommended to go down to the underground crypt and view the Neo-Gothic retable, a true masterpiece of carving.

Don't forget to step out onto Plaza de Armas to take panoramic photos of the cathedral. This vantage point offers the best view of its slender tower and the mosaic panels of the facade. You can combine your visit with a quiet prayer in one of the two meditation rooms or by exploring historical exhibits that tell the story of the cathedral's rebirth after natural disasters.

Getting There

Locating the cathedral is easy as it is situated in the very heart of the city on the main square, Plaza de Armas, at Manuel Antonio Matta 662. Thanks to its tall tower, the church is visible from afar, serving as an excellent landmark for walking tours through the central streets.

If you are arriving by plane, the journey from the airport will take about 15–20 minutes by taxi. It’s even faster from the main bus terminal—a taxi or local bus ride takes no more than 10 minutes, while walking enthusiasts can reach it in about half an hour, enjoying the views of the city blocks.

For those traveling by rental car, parking spaces are available near the square. Public transport also runs frequently in this area, with most routes stopping in the immediate vicinity of the cathedral.

History & Facts

The history of this site began as far back as 1577, when the first parish was established simultaneously with the founding of the city. Over the centuries, four different churches have stood on this foundation. Unfortunately, their fate was difficult: fires and devastating natural disasters repeatedly reduced them to ruins. The cathedral's current appearance is a result of the resilience of local residents and their faith in the future.

The turning point was the catastrophic earthquake of 1960, which completely destroyed the previous building. Initiated by Monseñor Francisco Valdés Subercaseaux, construction of a new, modern church began in 1962. The first stone was laid on May 1st, and fifteen years later, in 1977, the cathedral was solemnly consecrated, becoming a true triumph of the engineering thought of its time.

Interestingly, the final touch to the cathedral’s appearance—its famous stained-glass windows—did not appear until much later, in 2007. Today, St. Matthew's Cathedral is recognized as one of the most important 20th-century buildings in the region. The Obra Bicentenario award confirmed that the reconstruction did not just restore the building but created a new urban landmark that all generations of the city's residents are proud of.

Time Needed

You should set aside 1 to 2 hours to explore St. Matthew's Cathedral. This is plenty of time to leisurely admire the interior, enjoy the play of light through the stained-glass windows, and study the details of the Neo-Gothic architectural style. If you plan to attend a mass or listen to organ music, your stay might be slightly longer.

It is also recommended to leave 20–30 minutes for a stroll through the adjacent Plaza de Armas. This spot offers the best angles for photographs of the 45-meter tower, and the atmosphere of the central square itself allows you to better feel the rhythm of the city's life.

Working Hours

The cathedral is open to visitors daily; however, the schedule is divided into morning and evening hours with a midday break. On weekdays, the doors are typically open from 09:00 to 12:00 and from 14:30 to 19:30 (until 20:00 on Thursdays). These hours are convenient for both tourists and local parishioners.
