Muelle Historico

About

The Historic Pier, or Muelle Braun & Blanchard, is one of the most recognizable and atmospheric spots in Puerto Natales. Located on the shores of Last Hope Sound (Seno de Última Esperanza), this site is a unique monument to early 20th-century industrial architecture, once serving as the region's main trading gateway.

Today, only the wooden pilings remain of the once-grand structure, rising poetically over the crystal waters of the channel. This melancholy silhouette against the backdrop of the snow-capped Andes has become a true calling card for Chile in Patagonia. The ruins of the pier create an incredible contrast between the rugged industrial past and the pristine beauty of nature.

Situated across from the picturesque Antonio Varas Peninsula, this location draws photographers and travelers from around the world. It serves as a mandatory stop for anyone heading to the legendary glaciers or Torres del Paine National Park to feel the authentic spirit of the end of the world.

What to Do

Visiting the Historic Pier first and foremost immerses you in an atmosphere of tranquility. The main activity here is photography. At sunrise or sunset, when the sky over the fjord is painted in incredible shades of pink and gold, the remains of the pier become a perfect model for panoramic shots. The sea breeze and views of the Señoret Channel make a stroll along the Pedro Montt waterfront unforgettable.

For nature lovers, this place is a real gift, as it is perfect for birdwatching. In the waters of the sound and on the pilings themselves, you can often see graceful black-necked swans, coscoroba swans, as well as cormorants and vibrant flamingos. Observing their lives against the backdrop of the rugged mountains allows you to completely disconnect from the city bustle.

Beyond contemplation, it is pleasant just to spend time here, sitting on a bench and breathing in the salty air. After visiting the attraction, you can stop by one of the cozy nearby cafes to try local cuisine or warm up with a cup of coffee while continuing to admire the view of Patagonia's majestic fjords.

Getting There

Reaching this iconic landmark is easy, as it is located almost in the very center of Puerto Natales at Pedro Montt 1020. From the main square, Plaza de Armas, the walk takes about 10 minutes — a perfect option for a leisurely stroll through the picturesque streets.

If you are arriving from another region, for example, from Punta Arenas airport, you will need to take a bus or taxi. The drive along the highway to Puerto Natales takes about 3 hours. Most intercity buses stop near the central part of the town, from where the waterfront can be reached in a few minutes.

For those who prefer active recreation, bicycle rentals are popular in town — a great way to see the entire shoreline. If you are traveling by car, you can usually find available parking spaces near the pier.

History & Facts

The Historic Pier was built in the early 20th century by the powerful Braun & Blanchard company. At that time, the region was experiencing a significant economic boom linked to the development of sheep farming, and the pier became a vital transport hub. It was from here that tons of first-class wool and meat from local estancias (ranches) were shipped to international markets.

The history of this place is full of dramatic events. In the 1920s, during a period of large-scale strikes by workers demanding decent conditions, a major fire broke out at the company’s facilities. The fire destroyed many buildings, including warehouses and the pier itself. The structures were later rebuilt; however, by the mid-century, with the decline of large-scale ranching, the pier was no longer used for its intended purpose.

The town of Puerto Natales itself, officially founded in 1911, has absorbed the cultures of many peoples: from the indigenous Tehuelche to settlers from Germany, Croatia, and Spain. Today, the Historic Pier serves as a silent reminder of that "golden age" of trade and the brave seafarers, such as the crew of the HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin on board, who explored these harsh but beautiful lands.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the Historic Pier and take memorable photos, 30–60 minutes is sufficient for most travelers. This time is quite enough to enjoy the panorama of the sound and observe the local birds.

If you plan to combine your visit with a full walk along the waterfront, a visit to neighboring cafes, or waiting for the sunset, we recommend budgeting 1–2 hours in your schedule. This place is not for rushing and invites quiet contemplation of Patagonian nature.

Working Hours

Since the Historic Pier is an open public site on the city's waterfront, it is accessible for visiting 24 hours a day. You can come here at any time, whether it's early morning to catch the sunrise or late evening to see the ruins in the moonlight.

The site is open daily, from Monday to Sunday, without breaks or holidays, making it a very convenient stop on any tourist itinerary.
