This space of about 4 hectares is a stunning combination of strict layout and luxurious architecture. Wide alleys are lined with perfectly trimmed evergreen cypresses, creating an atmosphere of peace and solemnity. Magnificent mausoleums in classical European and eclectic styles tell the story of the region's prosperity at the turn of the 20th century.

The cemetery is unique as it serves as a living testament to the cultural diversity of Patagonia. Walking between the rows, you will notice the names of immigrants from Croatia, Spain, Italy, France, and Great Britain. It is not just a place of memory, but a true historical archive capturing the era of great discoveries, trade, and the settlement of the southernmost lands of the American continent.

What to Do

The main thing to do here is to take a leisurely stroll along the shaded pine and cypress alleys. You can admire the incredible mausoleums of Patagonia's wealthiest families, such as the Menéndez-Behety and the Braun Hamburgers. These structures are striking in their monumentality: wrought-iron fences, marble statues, and stained-glass windows turn a simple tour into a study of turn-of-the-century art history.

Be sure to visit the grave of the "Indio Desconocido" (Unknown Indian). This place is shrouded in mysticism: visitors still leave coins and light candles here in hopes of having their wishes granted. Observing this living tradition allows you to feel a special connection between the past and present, and witness the local folklore that lives in the hearts of city residents even decades later.

For photography enthusiasts, the cemetery provides an endless number of subjects: from the strict geometry of hedges to the majestic Neo-Baroque portico at the entrance. Here you can study epitaphs telling the fates of polar explorers, brave sailors, and the city's founders, making the visit an educational and deeply emotional experience.

Getting There

This unique site is located in the northern part of the city at Avenida Presidente Manuel Bulnes 29. The main monumental entrance is right on Bulnes Avenue, but the grounds can also be accessed through additional entrances on Francisco Bilbao and Angamos streets.

Getting here from the central part of the city (for example, from Plaza Muñoz Gamero) is very easy. A walk will take about 20–30 minutes (a distance of approximately 1.5 km), allowing you to get a better look at the city's architecture. If you prefer transport, you can use city buses running along Bulnes Avenue or take a taxi, which will get you to the gates in just a few minutes.

Bicycle rentals or organized tours, which often include a visit to the necropolis, are also available for tourists. Parking spaces are provided near the entrances, and the area itself is considered peaceful and quite suitable for pedestrians.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in April 1894, when, at the initiative of Governor Manuel Señoret, a new public cemetery was opened, replacing the old burial ground in the city center. The land was donated by the famous Sara Braun — one of the most influential women in the history of Patagonia. Later, in 1919, engineer Fortunato Circutti designed the famous outer walls and majestic gates.

Special attention should be paid to the monumental portico with its central chapel, designed in an eclectic Neo-Baroque style and decorated with figures known as the "Angels of Silence." Its construction took place from 1918 to 1923, funded by the same Sara Braun. This period coincided with a real building boom in the city, when the region's main architectural masterpieces were being built, reflecting the wealth of the sheep farming and gold mining era.

The necropolis has become a reflection of the complex history of migration to Magallanes. People from many different European countries are buried here: Croats, British, Spanish, and Germans who became pioneers in settling the southern lands. Among them is the sailor Charles Amherst Milward, whose biography inspired Bruce Chatwin to write his famous book "In Patagonia." In 2012, due to its historical and artistic value, the cemetery received the official status of a National Monument of Chile.

One of the most mysterious pages of history is the legend of the "Indio Desconocido" (Unknown Indian). A young man buried here in 1930 eventually became the object of a folk cult. Locals believe he performs miracles, so his grave is always covered with coins and notes of gratitude, and in 1968, a majestic bronze statue was installed here through donations from city residents.

Time Needed

To take a leisurely stroll through the main alleys and carefully examine the most significant architectural objects, a typical visitor will need 1 to 2 hours. This is enough time to walk along the central avenue, see the luxurious family vaults, and visit the grave of the Unknown Indian.

If you are interested in the history of immigration or architectural photography, your visit may take longer. Many tourists prefer to stay longer to study the inscriptions on headstones in different national sectors and enjoy the peaceful, meditative atmosphere of this "city within a city."

Working Hours

The cemetery is open to the public daily, allowing you to include it in your itinerary any day of the week. Official opening hours are: from 08:00 to 19:00, with no lunch breaks (Monday–Sunday).

Nevertheless, it is recommended to check the official website or local tourist centers before your visit, as schedules may change slightly on public holidays.
