General Weather Overview

The climate in this region can be described as sharply continental, with very contrasting seasonal changes. Fuyun is distinguished by an impressive annual temperature range: travellers here face harsh, frosty winters and surprisingly comfortable, mild summers. Thanks to this diversity, the city offers completely different experiences and types of leisure activities depending on the chosen time for your visit.

The winter months here are truly cold, with temperatures often dropping below -20°C, so high-quality warm clothing will be essential. Summer, on the contrary, pleases visitors with the absence of sweltering heat: the average temperature stays within +18...+20°C, creating ideal conditions for active tourism and long walks in the fresh air.

An important feature of the local weather is its exceptional dryness and stability. Precipitation falls extremely rarely and in minimal quantities throughout the year, whether it is snow in winter or rain in summer. This means that for most of the time, the sky above the city remains clear, and the low humidity helps the body adapt more easily to both the winter cold and summer warmth.

Temperature

The temperature patterns in Fuyun are characterized by pronounced seasonality and significant contrasts. Winter here is harsh and frosty: from December to February, the thermometer consistently stays below zero. The coldest month is January, when night temperatures drop on average to -22.3°C, and during the day the air warms up only to -10.6°C. Travellers planning a visit at this time will require serious warm gear.

Summer, on the other hand, brings pleasant warmth without exhausting heat, making this season the most comfortable for walking. July is considered the warmest month with an average daily maximum of about +26.7°C. In June and August, the weather is also favorable: during the day the air warms up to +25°C. Transitional seasons pass quite rapidly: positive temperatures are established as early as April, and a sharp cooling begins in October before the long winter.

A characteristic feature of the local climate is the noticeable temperature fluctuation during the day. The difference between day and night readings persists throughout the year, averaging 12–14 degrees. Even in the height of summer, when it is warm and sunny during the day in this region of China, the nights remain fresh and cool (about +13.7°C in July). Therefore, tourists are recommended to always have an extra layer of clothing with them for evening outings.

Precipitation

When heading to Fuyun, travellers should be prepared for an extremely arid climate. In this corner of the country, precipitation is a fairly rare and scarce phenomenon throughout the year. There is practically no concept of a rainy season in the usual sense: rainfall levels remain consistently low, often not exceeding 1 mm per month, making the region one of the driest to visit.

During the winter period, which is quite long and harsh here (from November to March), precipitation falls exclusively in the form of snow. Due to low temperatures, the snow cover may persist; however, the snowfalls themselves are usually light and short-lived. December, January, and February are considered the "driest" months, when on average only about 3 days with precipitation are recorded.

In the warm season, from May to September, the likelihood of precipitation increases slightly, but remains insignificant. During these months, as well as in transitional periods, the number of days with precipitation can reach 5–6 per month, but most often this is a short-term drizzle or light rain that passes quickly. Thanks to such weather, you can plan open-air excursions at practically any time of the year without fear of prolonged downpours.

What to Pack

When preparing for a trip to Fuyun, it is important to consider the specifics of the local climate with its harsh winter and pleasant, yet not hot, summer. If your journey is planned for the period from November to March, your luggage should be as warm as possible: temperatures here often drop below -20°C. Be sure to take high-quality thermal underwear, a thick windproof down jacket, wool socks, a hat, and warm gloves to feel comfortable during winter walks.

In summer, the weather becomes much milder, with average temperatures around +18...+20°C, which is ideal for active tourism. However, even in July and August, evenings can be cool, so we recommend adhering to the principle of layering. Pack T-shirts and light trousers for the day, but do not forget a fleece jacket, sweater, or windbreaker to put on after sunset. Spring and autumn are cool here, so mid-season clothing will be absolutely essential.

Regardless of the season, you will need comfortable and reliable walking shoes, as exploring the region involves active movement. Considering that the climate in this part of the country (China) is quite dry, it is worth bringing facial moisturizer and lip balm. Also, do not neglect protection against ultraviolet radiation: sunglasses and cream with SPF will come in handy all year round, as the sun here can be active even on frosty days.
