The seasons change very distinctly. Winter is long and frosty: from November to March, the thermometer stays confidently below zero, and in January, average temperatures reach -20°C and lower. Summer is short and moderately warm, without exhausting heat. Even in July, the warmest month, the air warms up on average to only +14°C, creating comfortable conditions for outdoor activities, but requiring warm clothing in your luggage.

A characteristic feature of the local weather is the extremely low amount of rainfall. Rain is a rarity, and even in the "wettest" summer months, minimal moisture falls. Thanks to this, the air always remains dry, which makes it easier to endure low winter temperatures; however, tourists should take care to protect their skin from windburn and the active sun.

The climatic conditions in Olgii dictate their own stern rules. Winter here is long and freezing: in January and December, night temperatures drop to an extreme -26°C, and during the day, the air rarely warms above -15°C. Such figures require travellers to prepare thoroughly and have special equipment for protection against the deep freeze.

The summer season brings relief but never turns into sweltering heat. The weather remains fresh: in July, the warmest month of the year, the daily maximum reaches only a comfortable +19°C, and the average temperature hovers around +14°C. These are ideal conditions for active walks, reminiscent of a mild spring when the sun warms but does not burn.

It is important to consider the sharp daily temperature fluctuations characteristic of the highlands. The difference between day and night is very palpable here: even after a fine summer day, the thermometer can drop to +8°C by night. The amplitude of fluctuations often exceeds 10 degrees, so the principle of layering clothes is relevant for Olgii all year round.

The climate in the city of Olgii is distinguished by exceptional dryness, so precipitation here is a rather rare and meagre phenomenon. Throughout most of the year, humidity levels remain minimal, and travellers are unlikely to encounter prolonged downpours. Even in months when the probability of precipitation increases, the total amount is measured literally in millimetres.

The winter period, as well as spring and autumn, pass practically without precipitation. January, for example, is often absolutely dry, which, combined with strong frosts, creates conditions for a severe but clear winter.

However, do not let this figure alarm you: the average volume of precipitation even at the peak of the season barely reaches 2 mm. This means that rains, if they happen, are very weak, short-lived, and often pass in the form of a light drizzle, not interfering with trips around Mongolia.

When planning a trip to Olgii, it is important to remember the harsh, sharply continental climate of this region. Winters here are very cold and prolonged, so if your trip falls during the period from November to March, high-quality thermal underwear, a warm down jacket, a windproof hat, and mittens are an absolute necessity. Given that even in the off-season night temperatures often drop below zero, warm clothing will be relevant for most of the year.

Summer in the region is cool, with daytime temperatures rarely exceeding +20°C, however, the weather can be changeable. The best strategy when packing your suitcase is to use the principle of layering. Take a fleece jacket and a dense windbreaker with you: they will protect against the piercing winds characteristic of the open spaces of Mongolia. Very little precipitation falls here, so an umbrella is unlikely to be useful, but a light raincoat will not go amiss.

For comfortable exploration of the surroundings, be sure to take comfortable trekking boots with non-slip soles. Also, do not forget sunglasses and cream with a high protection factor (SPF), as the sun in the highlands can be very active even in cool weather.
