In spring and autumn, the difference between daytime warmth and nighttime cool can be very substantial. When heading to Khovd, prepare for the peculiarities of the sharply continental climate. Winters here are long and frosty, so high-quality thermal underwear, a windproof down jacket, a warm hat, and gloves are not just a recommendation, but an absolute necessity. Since there is extremely little precipitation, you are unlikely to need rubber boots, but insulated footwear with thick soles is mandatory to preserve warmth during walks.

Summer in this region of Mongolia is quite comfortable, however, temperature changes between day and night can be substantial. The best strategy is to use the layering principle: during the day it may be warm enough for a t-shirt, while in the evening you will want to throw on a fleece top or a light jacket. Be sure to take sunglasses and cream with high SPF, as solar activity is high and the number of clear days is abundant.

Regardless of the season, it is worth considering the likelihood of winds characteristic of open spaces, so a windbreaker or dense outerwear will be useful year-round. For exploring the surroundings, choose durable and comfortable trekking shoes. An umbrella will hardly be useful due to low humidity, whereas moisturising cream and lip balm will help cope with the dryness of the air.
