General Weather Overview

The climate in the city of Pu'er can be described as mild subtropical, often reminiscent of an atmosphere of "eternal spring". Thanks to its favourable geographical location, there is neither sweltering heat nor severe frost here, making the region comfortable to visit practically all year round. The temperature regime is surprisingly stable: even in the coolest winter months, the thermometer rarely drops below 15°C during the day, while in summer, average readings hover around a pleasant 23–24°C.

Two seasons stand out clearly during the year, depending on rainfall. Winter and early spring are predominantly dry periods with plenty of sunny days, ideal for exploring the surroundings and tea plantations. Starting from May, the weather changes: the monsoon season arrives. Summer in Pu'er is warm but very humid — from June to August, it can rain almost daily (up to 28–29 rainy days per month), so an umbrella will become your main companion at this time of year.

Temperature

The climate in Pu'er, China, is characterised by mild winters and warm, rainy summers. The average annual temperature here is comfortable for travel, ranging from +14.8°C in January to +24.5°C in May. The warmest months, when the average temperature stays above +23°C, fall between April and August, reaching their peak in May. If you prefer cooler weather, the freshest months are December and January, when the average temperature is around +15°C.

The summer period, especially from June to August, is quite warm in Pu'er, with average daytime temperatures around +27°C and nighttime temperatures around +20°C. However, this is also the height of the rainy season: July and August are the wettest months, which can lead to high humidity. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the most comfortable conditions for visiting Pu'er, delighting travellers with pleasant temperatures and significantly less rainfall.

Winters in Pu'er are surprisingly mild and predominantly dry. In December and January, daytime temperatures rise to a very comfortable +20-21°C, dropping to +9-10°C at night. Precipitation is extremely rare at this time of year, making winter months ideal for those who prefer cool but sunny weather. Throughout the year, especially during the dry periods of spring and autumn, noticeable daily temperature fluctuations occur, where the difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows can reach 10-14°C.

Precipitation

Seasonality in rainfall is clearly traced in Pu'er, dividing the year into dry and wet periods. The dry season lasts from November to April. During these months, the probability of precipitation is minimal: for example, in February and March, only 3–4 rainy days are recorded, and rainfall levels do not exceed 1 mm. This is the most comfortable time for excursions and long walks in the fresh air.

With the arrival of May, the weather changes, and the rainy season begins, lasting until October. The wettest months are July and August, when it rains almost daily — up to 28–29 days per month. Travellers planning a trip during this period should definitely bring an umbrella and waterproof shoes, as precipitation becomes a constant companion.

Precipitation in Pu'er falls exclusively as rain, as even in the coldest months (January and December), the temperature does not drop to the values required for snowfall. By November, the rains cease abruptly, returning clear and dry weather to the city, favourable for tourism.

What to Pack

Pu'er is famous for its mild climate, often compared to "eternal spring", so you certainly won't need heavy winter coats here. The main principle when packing your suitcase is layering. During the day, especially in the spring months (March-April), the air warms up to a comfortable 20-28°C, so the basis of your wardrobe should be t-shirts, light shirts, and trousers made of natural breathable fabrics. However, if your trip falls during the winter period (December to February), note that nights can be cool (around 9-10°C), so a light jacket, jumper, or fleece will be necessary for evening walks.

Particular attention should be paid to the rainy season, which lasts from May to October. In the summer months (June-August), precipitation occurs very frequently — up to 29 days a month, so a reliable umbrella and a light, compact raincoat will become your best friends. During this period, humidity rises, so clothes should dry quickly. In the dry season (winter and early spring), rain is a rarity, but the sun can be quite active, so be sure to pack sunglasses, SPF cream, and a hat with a visor.

Since exploring Pu'er often involves visiting tea plantations and nature walks, the main element of your gear should be comfortable shoes. Choose tried-and-tested trainers or boots with non-slip soles suitable for long walks on uneven terrain. It is also worth taking insect repellent, which may come in handy during excursions in the humid summer period.
