The climate in Bukavu, situated on the southern shores of the picturesque Lake Kivu in DR Congo, is classified as a subtropical highland type. Thanks to its elevation of approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, the city escapes the sweltering equatorial heat, offering travelers mild and stable temperatures throughout the year.

The local climate is characterized by distinct seasonality, dividing the year into dry and wet periods. Despite the abundance of rainfall in certain months, the weather remains fairly predictable, and the surrounding hills combined with the proximity to the water create a unique microclimate perfect for relaxation and exploring the region's nature.

Temperature patterns in Bukavu are remarkably consistent, which is typical for the equatorial highlands. The average annual temperature range fluctuates between +16°C and +26°C. There are no harsh winters or unbearable summer heatwaves, making this part of DR Congo comfortable to visit year-round.

The warmest months are January and February, when daytime highs can reach +28-30°C. Between June and August, a slight cooling occurs: average daytime temperatures stay around +24-25°C, while nights become noticeably fresher, dropping to +15°C. These daily fluctuations make mornings and evenings in the city very pleasant for strolling along the waterfront.

In Bukavu, as in many regions of DR Congo, there is a clear alternation of seasons. The rainy season lasts from October to May, bringing heavy and frequent precipitation. The wettest months are April and October, when rain can be accompanied by thick fog, limiting visibility on Lake Kivu.

The dry season begins in June and continues until September. This period is characterized by minimal rainfall, although brief showers are still possible. The driest months are July and August, when the number of rainy days typically does not exceed 3–4 per month. There is no snowfall in this region, and overall humidity drops noticeably during the summer period, making outdoor activities more comfortable.

When traveling to Bukavu, it's best to follow the principle of layering. Year-round, you will need lightweight clothing made from natural fabrics, such as t-shirts, shorts, and light trousers. However, don't forget to pack a fleece jacket or a windbreaker—in the evenings, when temperatures in DR Congo can drop to +15-16°C, you will certainly want some warmer layers.

If your trip coincides with the rainy season (October–May), be sure to bring a high-quality raincoat, an umbrella, and waterproof footwear. For walking through Bukavu's hilly terrain, comfortable sneakers or trekking boots are essential. Also, don't forget sunscreen with a high SPF, a wide-brimmed hat, and insect repellent—protection from the sun and insects is important here at any time of year.
