Today, its well-kept grounds of several hectares are home to about 300 animals representing over 90 different species. Here you can find exotic inhabitants from other continents as well as unique representatives of local fauna. Thanks to a major renovation in 2012, the enclosures became more spacious and comfortable, bringing living conditions as close as possible to the natural environment.

The neighborhood with the Municipal Park creates a special atmosphere: the abundance of greenery and proximity to the sea make the air here surprisingly fresh. The zoo is perfect for those looking for a relaxing break and a chance to get closer to the natural world without leaving the city limits.

What to Do

The main pleasure of visiting Limassol Zoo is the opportunity for leisurely observation of its inhabitants in a cozy, almost homey atmosphere. Be sure to stop by the pink flamingo enclosures, whose elegance always attracts photography enthusiasts, and watch the monkeys' playful antics.

Pay special attention to the Cypriot mouflons. These rare mountain sheep are a national treasure of the island, and here you have a rare chance to see them up close. The collection also includes reptiles, various birds, and ungulates. The compact size of the grounds allows you to see all the animals without feeling tired from long walks.

For families with children, the zoo is an excellent educational platform. Little ones can learn about the animal world and then relax in the green area of the Municipal Park. The calm atmosphere and shady paths are perfect for relaxation and pleasant family time in the center of a busy resort.

Getting There

Thanks to its location right in the city center, getting to Limassol Zoo is very easy. The site is situated on Lord Byron Street, in close proximity to the promenade and the Municipal Park. If you are staying in the central part of the city, a walk will be a great start to your day.

For those who prefer public transport, city buses running along major tourist routes stop near the park. You can also use a taxi or a private car — there are parking spaces nearby, which is convenient for travelers from other regions.

If you are traveling from other cities in Cyprus, the journey from Larnaca via the A1 highway takes about an hour, and from Paphos via the A6 highway, it takes approximately 45 minutes. Its excellent transport accessibility makes the zoo a popular spot for a spontaneous visit during the day.

History & Facts

The history of the zoo began in 1954 in a quite unusual way. After an international fair held in the Municipal Park, a monkey enclosure remained, which the locals loved so much that the city's mayor, Costas Partasides, decided to establish a full-fledged zoological garden. The official opening took place in 1956.

In its early decades, the zoo's collection was expanded largely through gifts. For instance, the first monkey was donated by a local resident, Mrs. Grigorasku, while a pair of famous Cypriot mouflons was brought from the Paphos Forest. One of the most vivid chapters in its history was the arrival of Julie the elephant from Singapore, who became the park's living symbol for many years.

In 2012, the zoo experienced a "rebirth" — after an extensive renovation, it was transformed into a modern space with improved conditions for both animals and visitors. Today, it is a place where traditions are honored while striving to meet high standards for the care of rare fauna species.

Time Needed

Limassol Zoo is known for its compactness and well-thought-out layout, so exploring it won't take up too much of your time. For a standard introductory visit, 1–2 hours is sufficient for most visitors.
