They are located in the picturesque Cuspibamba Valley and serve as the starting point for exploring the old city.

Now, a vibrant cultural life thrives inside the gate: it houses art galleries, a small history museum, and a cozy cafe. The combination of ancient stonework, bright roof tiles, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains makes this place a must-visit on any tourist's itinerary.

What to Do

The first thing to do when visiting the gate is to climb its walls. From here, you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of Loja with its mosaic of red-tiled roofs, surrounded by the emerald peaks of the southern Andes. It is the perfect spot to appreciate the scale of the city and take striking photographs against the mountain backdrop.

Art lovers should definitely visit the museum and exhibition halls located inside the towers. They showcase works by local artists, ranging from classical painting to modern sculpture. After your cultural program, you can relax in the authentic cafe or browse the souvenir shops selling unique handmade crafts that reflect the spirit of the region.

A walk by the gate is easily combined with a visit to nearby attractions, such as the historic churches of San Francisco and Santo Domingo. If your visit coincides with the weekend, you will likely encounter street concerts or festivals, as Loja rightfully prides itself on its status as the country's musical capital.

Getting There

The attraction is conveniently located in the historic center at 18 de Noviembre & Avenida Gran Colombia, right at the entrance to the old town. If you are arriving in Loja from Quito or Guayaquil, it is most convenient to use intercity buses or a domestic flight to La Toma Airport, located about 30 kilometers away.

Within the city, the easiest way to reach the gate is on foot if you are already in the center, for example, near the Cathedral. You can also take a taxi or local buses running from the main bus station (Terminal Terrestre de Loja), which is about 2–3 kilometers away.

Travelers in their own or rented cars should follow the Pan-American Highway (E35). The structure is clearly visible from a distance, and there are parking spaces available nearby, making a visit to this part of the city comfortable and safe.

History & Facts

This majestic structure was born from the region's rich history. The City Gate was built in the late 18th century as a key element of the defensive system of the city founded by Spanish Captain Alonso de Mercadillo. After the first settlement was damaged by earthquakes, the city was moved to the Cuspibamba Valley, where it became an important administrative outpost of the empire.

In colonial times, Loja served as a strategic bridge between the Pacific coast and the Amazon jungle. Few know that it was here in the 17th century that the active use of quinine began—a miraculous cure for malaria extracted from the bark of local trees. The gate served as a symbol of control over this valuable trade and the city's protection.

In November 1820, the city became part of the independent Republic of Ecuador. Today, the architectural appearance of the gate is carefully preserved, reminding tourists of the times when the fates of expeditions to El Dorado were decided within these walls and the history of the southern part of the country was forged.

Time Needed

To admire the gate's architecture, browse the exhibition galleries, and take panoramic photos from the ramparts, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This is the optimal amount of time for a brief introduction to the site as part of a city sightseeing tour.

If you plan to leisurely enjoy the atmosphere at the local cafe, study the museum exhibits in detail, and walk to the nearby churches and parks of the old town, we recommend allocating half a day (about 3–4 hours) for your visit.

Working Hours

The attraction is exceptionally convenient to visit: The City Gate is open 24 hours a day every day of the week, including weekends and holidays. This allows you to admire its impressive silhouette both in bright daylight and in the evening, when the artistic lighting is turned on.

Despite 24-hour access to the structure itself, keep in mind that the indoor galleries, museum exhibits, and the cafe operate on a standard schedule, usually closing in the evening. Plan your visit for midday if you wish to see the exhibitions.
