General Weather Overview

Alexandria, located on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, is characterized by a hot desert climate with a noticeable Mediterranean influence. This means the city enjoys a long, hot, and very dry summer, while winters here are mild and bring the main, though small, share of annual precipitation. Overall, the climate of Alexandria offers many sunny days throughout the year.

In Alexandria, two main seasons are clearly distinguished. Summer, lasting roughly from May to September, is characterized by high temperatures, averaging around 25-28°C, and an almost complete absence of rain – an ideal time for those who love the sun and heat. Winter, from December to February, is significantly milder, with average temperatures around 15-17°C. It is during these months that the majority of the annual rainfall occurs, although the amount remains small. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional periods with comfortable temperatures and minimal rainfall.

Temperature

The annual temperature trend in Alexandria demonstrates a classic pattern for this region, with a pronounced hot summer and a mild, humid winter. The hottest months are traditionally July and August. During this period, the average air temperature reaches 27.4°C and 27.8°C respectively, and daily highs regularly rise above the 30°C mark (up to 30.5°C in July and 30.8°C in August). The coolest time of the year falls in January and February, when the average temperature is about 15.0°C - 15.1°C. In these months, night-time lows can drop to 12.1°C - 12.4°C, bringing a noticeable coolness.

The summer season in Alexandria is quite long. Already in May, the average temperature rises to 22.2°C, and comfortable warm weather holds until September, when the average temperature is 26.9°C. The peak of summer heat occurs in June (average 25.3°C), July, and August. Maximum daily temperatures in the summer months vary from 25.9°C in May to an impressive 30.8°C in August. Nights during this period also remain very warm: minimum temperatures range from 18.6°C in May to almost 25°C (24.4°C in July, 24.8°C in August) at the height of summer, making evening walks particularly pleasant.

Winter in Alexandria is notable for its mildness and relatively small amount of precipitation, which mostly falls during this period. From December (average temperature 17.3°C) to February (average temperature 15.0°C), the weather remains comfortable for most travellers. During the day, the thermometer in winter months usually stays in the range of 17°C - 20°C (for example, the maximum average in December is 20.1°C, in January 17.7°C). At night, the temperature drops to 12°C - 14.5°C, so a light jacket or sweater will be very useful. Temperature fluctuations between day and night throughout the year average 5-7°C, which is a moderate figure and ensures fairly stable temperature conditions throughout the day, especially in the summer months when the difference between the daily maximum and night minimum is not so great.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Alexandria has a distinctly seasonal character, with a very long and dry summer period and a wetter, yet still low-rain winter. The city receives an extremely insignificant amount of rainfall throughout the year, which is typical for its climatic zone.

The greatest amount of precipitation, albeit very modest, falls in the winter months. January stands out as the "wettest" month: on average, 2 mm of precipitation is recorded here, and the number of rainy days reaches 11. It is followed by December and February, where about 1 mm of precipitation falls, and there are approximately 7 rainy days each. In March and November, precipitation is also about 1 mm, but the number of days with rain decreases to 4-5. Given the small volumes, precipitation during these periods is likely to be light rain or drizzle.

From April to October, an extremely dry season sets in in Alexandria. Notably, from May to September inclusive, no precipitation is observed at all (0 mm), and there are no rainy days in these months. In April and October, 0 mm of precipitation is also recorded, however, statistics allow for the presence of 1-2 days with very insignificant precipitation. Thus, summer and early autumn offer travellers practically guaranteed sunny weather without any rain.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Alexandria, it is important to consider the local climate so that your wardrobe matches the weather. In summer, from May to September, when the air temperature often exceeds 25-28°C and there is practically no rain, the basis of your luggage should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses, and cream with high SPF to protect against the active sun. Swimwear will also be very handy if you plan a holiday by the sea. Comfortable shoes for long walks around the city are a must-have at any time of year.

In winter, from December to February, the weather in Alexandria becomes significantly cooler, with average temperatures around 15-17°C and night-time cooling down to 12°C. During this period, the main, though small, part of annual precipitation also falls (about 1-2 mm per month, up to 11 rainy days in January). Therefore, it is recommended to bring warmer clothes: jeans, sweaters, a light jacket, or a windbreaker. The principle of layering will be very useful here, allowing you to adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. A light folding umbrella or a waterproof jacket may be useful, especially in January. For the transitional seasons – spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) – layering is also relevant: t-shirts, light cardigans, and a windbreaker will help you feel comfortable both in the warm daytime hours and on cool evenings.
