General Weather Overview

The climate in the city of Gambela can be described as hot and tropical. The weather remains warm throughout the year, without sharp temperature drops, which is typical for this region of Ethiopia. Travellers should expect consistently high temperatures that rarely drop below comfortable levels, even at night.

Distinct dry and wet seasons are observed throughout the year. The hottest and driest period falls at the beginning of the year: in February and March, daytime temperatures often exceed 35°C, and rain is practically absent. This time is ideal for those who enjoy the sun and tolerate heat well.

From April to October, the weather pattern changes, and the number of rainy days increases significantly, peaking in May and October. Despite frequent rainfall, air temperatures become milder and more pleasant, hovering around 24–26°C on average. This long wet season brings freshness but also increased cloudiness.

Temperature

The region's climatic conditions dictate their own rules, and Gambela welcomes travellers with high temperatures almost all year round. The hottest period here is not during the calendar summer, but at the beginning of the year: in February and March, average daytime highs reach 35.6°C. Dry heat prevails during these months, so tourists are advised to plan activities for the morning or evening hours to avoid peak solar activity.

The situation changes with the arrival of the calendar summer: the rainy season brings long-awaited freshness. July and August are considered the coolest months of the year, when the average air temperature drops to 24°C, and daytime figures rarely exceed 27.3°C. During this period, the heat recedes, giving way to milder but humid weather, making outdoor stays more comfortable for those who do not tolerate extreme heat well.

Night-time temperatures in Gambela remain surprisingly stable and pleasant throughout the year, varying in the range of 20°C to 24°C. This means that even after the hottest March day, the night brings relief. The most noticeable contrast between daytime heat and night-time coolness is observed in the dry season, whereas in rainy months, daily temperature fluctuations become less pronounced.

Precipitation

The climate in this region is characterised by distinct seasonality, which is important to consider when planning a trip. Gambela welcomes travellers with dry and hot weather during the winter months and early spring. From December to March, the probability of precipitation is minimal here: for example, in January, statistically only one rainy day is recorded, and rainfall levels tend towards zero. This is the ideal time for those who prefer clear skies and wish to avoid inclement weather.

The situation changes radically with the arrival of spring. Already in April, the number of rainy days rises sharply, heralding the start of a long wet season. The peak of inclement weather falls on the period from May to October. During these months, especially in May and October, it can rain almost daily — statistics show up to 25 days with precipitation per month. When travelling through the country of Ethiopia at this time, it is essential to ensure you have waterproof clothing and umbrellas.

Summer months also remain quite humid: from June to September, it rains on average from 21 to 24 days each month. Precipitation during this period is regular. A gradual decrease in humidity and the number of rainy days is observed only in November, when nature begins a smooth transition back to the dry season, preparing for a sunny winter.

What to Pack

When preparing for your trip, keep in mind that Gambela is distinguished by a hot tropical climate. The basis of your wardrobe should consist of light clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen, which allow the body to breathe. Since daytime temperatures often exceed +30°C, especially between January and March, be sure to bring quality sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat or cap, and cream with high UV protection.

If your journey falls during the rainy season, which is quite long here (the active phase lasts from May to October), a light raincoat or compact umbrella must be added to your packing list. During these months, the number of rainy days is high, so waterproof but "breathable" footwear will be extremely useful. However, the air temperature remains high even during the rains, so you will not need warm jackets — a light windbreaker is sufficient.

For evening walks and protection against insects, it is recommended to have light trousers and long-sleeved shirts. Nights here are warm, with temperatures rarely dropping below +20°C, so the principle of layering is relevant more for comfort and hygiene than for keeping warm. Choose comfortable shoes with flat soles, suitable for long walks on uneven terrain, to explore the surroundings with comfort.
