General Weather Character

The climate in the city of Nekemte can be characterized as mild and moderately warm, which is typical for the highland regions of Ethiopia. There is no scorching heat or severe cold here, making a stay comfortable at almost any time of the year. The temperature background remains surprisingly stable: average figures fluctuate in a pleasant range from +18°C to +24°C.

The year is clearly divided into two main periods: the dry season and the rainy season. From June to September, the city is covered by heavy rainfall, with the number of rainy days reaching a maximum, while the air temperature drops slightly. At this time, nature flourishes, but travellers should be prepared for high humidity and frequent downpours.

The most favourable time to visit is considered the period from November to March. During these months, there is very little rainfall, and the sun shines brightly, warming the air to comfortable levels. This is the ideal time for walks and exploring the city without the risk of getting soaked in the rain.

Temperature

The climate in the city of Nekemte is distinguished by pleasant mildness, without extreme heat or bitter cold. The warmest period here is considered the beginning of the year: from February to April, the air warms up the most. The peak temperatures occur in March, when average figures reach 23.8°C, and during the day, the thermometer can rise to almost 30°C. This is an excellent time for those who love warmth but wish to avoid exhausting heat.

Interestingly, the summer months, on the contrary, bring coolness. July and August are the "coldest" time of the year with an average temperature of about 18.5–18.7°C. During the day in this period, the air rarely warms up above 22°C, which creates a feeling of freshness. This drop in temperature is associated with the rainy season, which brings humidity and cloud cover, protecting the city from the scorching sun.

Calendar winter (December and January) in this region of Ethiopia delights with comfortable warmth: the average temperature holds at the level of 21–22°C. However, travellers should take into account daily temperature fluctuations. Throughout the year, the difference between the daily maximum and the nightly minimum can be 10–12 degrees. Even in the warmest months, the nights remain fresh (around 15–18°C), so a light jacket or sweater will be useful for evening walks.

Precipitation

The character of precipitation in Nekemte has a clearly defined seasonality, which is important to consider when planning a trip. The driest period falls on the winter months, especially on January, when the average amount of rainfall is 0 mm, and the probability of rain is minimal (about 3 rainy days for the entire month). This is the best time for those who prefer clear skies and dry weather for walking.

The situation changes drastically with the arrival of summer. Starting from May, the number of rainy days grows rapidly, reaching its peak in June, July, and August. In these months, precipitation falls practically daily (up to 30–31 days with precipitation per month). Rains in this period are frequent, but the total volume of falling moisture is distributed evenly, creating a stable humid atmosphere.

The maximum volume of precipitation is usually recorded in September (about 32 mm), while rains continue to fall almost every day. By October, the intensity of precipitation begins to decrease, and in November, the rainy season finally retreats, giving way to drier and more comfortable weather.

What to Pack

When packing for Nekemte, it is important to consider seasonality to feel comfortable in any weather. In the dry period, which lasts from November to March, it is usually warm and sunny during the day, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light items made of natural fabrics: t-shirts, shirts, and summer trousers. However, do not forget that nights in this region can be quite fresh, with temperatures around +15°C, so be sure to bring a hoodie, a fleece jacket, or a light windbreaker for evening walks.

If your trip to Ethiopia falls during the rainy season (predominantly from May to October), the approach to packing must be more thorough. In the summer months, precipitation falls practically daily, so a high-quality raincoat, a waterproof windbreaker, and a reliable umbrella will become essential items. Pay special attention to footwear: it should be closed, waterproof, and comfortable, preferably with a non-slip sole, as the roads can be washed out.

Regardless of the time of year, the best strategy will be the principle of layering in clothing, allowing you to quickly adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Also, do not underestimate the activity of the sun: be sure to put sunscreen, sunglasses, and headwear in your luggage, even if the forecast promises cloudiness. For excursions and exploring the city, choose proven, worn-in shoes in which your feet will be comfortable during long walks.
