Metz Cathedral

About

Towering majestically over the city of Metz, this cathedral is one of the most impressive Gothic structures France has to offer. Officially known as the Cathedral of Saint Stephen (Cathédrale Saint-Étienne), it captures the imagination with its sheer scale: its 42-meter-high vaults are among the three highest in the country.

The cathedral earned the poetic nickname "God's Lantern" thanks to its luminous interior. This is no coincidence—its stained-glass windows cover approximately 6,500 square meters, making it one of the largest such complexes in the world. Here, medieval glasswork harmoniously coexists with modern masterpieces created by artists like Marc Chagall.

As the primary Catholic cathedral of the Lorraine region, it is more than just a religious site; it is a true open-air museum. Built from yellow "Jaumont" limestone, the building literally glows in the sunlight, serving as the architectural landmark and the heart of the city's historic center.

What to Do

The main reason to step beneath these soaring vaults is the incredible play of light. Be sure to take your time examining the stained-glass windows. The works of Marc Chagall are particularly striking, with their blue and red tones creating a unique, mystical atmosphere in the choir and nave.

Descend into the crypt, which houses not only church relics but also the city's legend—a stuffed effigy (or sculpture) of the Graoully dragon. According to legend, this beast once terrified local residents until it was defeated by the first bishop.

Don't forget to look closely at the intricate interior carvings and numerous sculptures. If you are lucky enough to join a guided tour, you will learn many secrets about the symbolism of Gothic ornamentation and the long construction history of this stone giant. In the silence of the cathedral, you can simply sit on a bench and feel the grandeur of the moment while watching sunbeams pierce through the ancient glass.

Getting There

This architectural masterpiece is located in the heart of the historic center on Place d’Armes (official address — 2 Pl. de Chambre). If you are arriving from Paris, the most convenient way is to take the high-speed TGV train, which will get you to the city in about 1.5 hours.

From the main railway station, the cathedral is just a 15–20 minute walk away through charming historic streets. You can also use a local taxi or take a city bus that will quickly bring you to the central district.

For those traveling by car, there are paid parking lots near the cathedral, though traffic in the historic center can be restricted. The best way to experience the atmosphere is on foot.

History & Facts

The history of this site stretches back to antiquity: a church dedicated to Saint Stephen was consecrated here as early as the 5th century. Since then, the building has undergone many transformations. In the 11th century, with the support of the Holy Roman Emperors, the cathedral was rebuilt in the Romanesque style and solemnly consecrated in 1040.

The cathedral began to take on its current magnificent Gothic appearance in 1240. Construction lasted for almost three centuries! The building's uniqueness also lies in the fact that it was created by joining two separate churches: the nave of Saint Stephen and an older Romanesque structure, resulting in a one-of-a-kind architectural ensemble.

A popular local legend tells of the Graoully dragon, which once terrorized the city. It is said that the first bishop banished the monster, and today an image of this legendary creature can be found in the cathedral's crypt. This adds a touch of mystery and local folklore to the solemn Gothic temple.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the interiors, study the details of the stained glass, and visit the crypt, most travelers need between 1 and 2 hours. This is enough time to soak in the atmosphere and take some memorable photos.
