The museum was officially opened in December 1998. Its bright and spacious building was designed by architect Adrien Fainsilber. It is interesting to note that the museum was built on the site of former city slaughterhouses, which gives this cultural space a special symbolism and highlights the transformation of the urban landscape.
Inside, visitors will find extensive exhibition halls showcasing an impressive panorama of art, covering the period from 1870 (Impressionism) to the present day. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, photography, and video art, offering a deep immersion into the evolution of artistic movements. Since 2008, the museum has been headed by Estelle Pietrzyk, an experienced curator who previously worked at such renowned institutions as the Picasso Museum and the Rodin Museum, and also participated in the creation of the Soulages Museum.
