What to Do

The main attraction here is animal observation. Walking along the winding paths, you can encounter graceful red deer, mouflons, and majestic European bison. Visitors are particularly intrigued by the secretive lynxes and wild cats, as well as the aviaries with birds of prey and wise owls.

For young explorers, there is the Wildpark-Akademie. This program offers more than just viewing the exhibits; it encourages active interaction with the natural world, where you can try your hand at archery or go for a pony ride. Many locals choose this park as the perfect venue for children's birthday parties.

After an active walk, it is pleasant to stop by the "Uhu-Pavillon" restaurant or grab a snack at the refreshment kiosk. The grounds also feature playgrounds and unique themed zones, such as an exhibition of wood and stone crafts, as well as musical forest instruments that both children and adults can play.

Getting There

Reaching this natural corner in the St. Johann district is quite simple. The park is located at Meerwiesertalweg 140, directly opposite the Hermann-Neuberger-Sportschule. If you are traveling by car, you can use a GPS with the following coordinates: 49° 15′ 5.5″ N, 7° 1′ 40.7″ E.

For those who prefer public transport, buses run regularly from the city center. You should get off at the stop nearest to the St. Johann forest. A taxi ride from the main station takes about 10–15 minutes, making it a convenient option for families with children or large groups.

Thanks to its convenient location within the city forest, a visit to the zoo can easily be combined with a stroll along shady paths, enjoying the fresh air and silence far from the noisy city streets.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in 1929. At the time of its founding, the collection was modest, featuring only 12 animals representing typical regional fauna. The creators aimed to show local residents the natural richness of their home region.

In 1939, the park's regular operations were interrupted, and it temporarily closed. Interestingly, during that period, all the animals were released into the wild back into their natural habitats. It took many years for the idea of reviving this place to become a reality again.

The site’s second birth took place in 1956 on an area of nine hectares. Since then, the territory has been constantly expanded and improved, transforming into a modern recreation center. A significant milestone was 2009, when the park updated its navigation system and installed new information boards for visitors.

Time Needed

To leisurely walk through the entire area and pay attention to every inhabitant, visitors usually need 2 to 3 hours. This is plenty of time to enjoy the quiet of the forest trails and take beautiful photos of the animals in their natural environment.

If you are planning a visit with children, it is worth setting aside a little more time. A stop at the playground or lunch in the cozy pavilion can extend your stay to half a day, making your visit both fulfilling and relaxed.

Working Hours

One of the park's main features is its accessibility: it is open 24 hours a day, every day, including weekends and holidays. This allows visitors to enjoy a forest walk even in the early morning hours or at dusk.

However, please note that the supporting infrastructure, such as the Uhu-Pavillon restaurant, snack kiosks, and the Wildpark-Akademie activities, operate on their own schedules, which we recommend checking in advance before your visit.
