What to Do

A visit to Stendal City Zoo promises a rich program for both adults and children. You can observe graceful Amur tigers, see powerful bears, and learn about the habits of playful rhesus macaques. Bird lovers will appreciate the presence of snowy owls and majestic rheas, while the peacocks roaming freely along the paths make for great photo opportunities.

Special conditions have been created for young explorers: in the petting enclosure, you can feed friendly goats with special food from vending machines, pet guinea pigs, or watch the ponies. After meeting the animals, children can burn off energy on a modern playground with trampolines and slides, while adults enjoy a rest in a cozy cafe on the terrace.

In addition to touring the enclosures, it is worth taking time for a walk along the adjacent Stadtsee lake. This is a wonderful place for quiet relaxation, where you can admire the water surface and, if you're lucky, see the launch of model ships. The combination of an educational stroll through the zoo and relaxation in nature makes this visit truly harmonious.

Getting There

The attraction is conveniently located at Uchtewall 13, practically in the city center, right next to the Stadtsee lake. If you are already walking through the historic center, getting to the zoo is easy: it is a 10–15 minute walk from iconic spots like St. Nicholas Cathedral or Roland Square. The route passes through well-kept city blocks, making the walk itself a pleasant start to your visit.

For those arriving at Stendal station, you can use local taxi services or take a bus to the stops located near the lake. If you prefer walking, the route from the station takes about 20–30 minutes. For travelers arriving by car, parking spaces are provided nearby, from which you can reach the park entrance in just a few minutes.

History & Facts

The history of Tiergarten Stendal began in 1934 when it opened as a small zoo dedicated exclusively to local wildlife. Unfortunately, in 1944, the area was seriously damaged by aerial bombings, and the park's operations were temporarily suspended. However, reconstruction began as early as 1952, and the zoo once again became a favorite leisure spot for citizens under the name Heimat-Tiergarten.

Over time, the collection expanded, and exotic animals from all over the world were added to the local species. A landmark event was the construction of the first bear enclosure in 1957. Decades later, between 2020 and 2021, it underwent a complete reconstruction: a modern complex that meets the strictest European standards for animal welfare was built in place of the old structure.

Today, the Stendal Zoo is not just a place for walks, but also an important center for biodiversity conservation. Special attention is given to endangered species, such as the majestic European bison and Amur tigers. The evolution from a modest nature corner to a full-fledged 6-hectare zoological park reflects the city's commitment to ecology and the education of the younger generation.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the enclosures, spend time interacting with the residents of the petting area, and enjoy the park's atmosphere, most visitors need 2 to 3 hours. If you are planning a trip with children, it is worth setting aside extra time for the adventure playground and a break at the cafe.

The zoo is perfect for a "half-day getaway" format. Thanks to its compactness and thoughtful layout, it allows you to gain many impressions without feeling tired, making it an excellent choice for a relaxed family weekend combined with a walk along the lake shore.

Working Hours

Stendal Zoo is open to visitors daily, making it easy to plan a visit any day of the week. The park's gates are usually open from 09:00 to 16:00, including Saturday and Sunday.

Please note that operating hours may be adjusted depending on the season or public holidays. To get the most up-to-date information on opening hours and possible schedule changes, it is recommended to check the official website of the city service portal before your visit.
