How to get to Roatan

Roatan is the jewel of the Caribbean Sea and the largest of the Bay Islands belonging to Honduras. This renowned destination is famous for its pristine white beaches and incredible diving opportunities on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, attracting travellers from all over the world. Reaching this tropical paradise is possible through various means, though tourists most frequently choose air travel or a combined route via the mainland.

The fastest and most comfortable way to arrive on the island is by air transport. Roatan is served by the international Roatan Airport (RTB), which receives direct flights from major US cities, as well as connecting flights from other countries.

The airport is conveniently located in close proximity to the main resort areas, allowing tourists to be on the beach almost immediately after landing. Air connections are well-developed here, so planning a flight usually presents no difficulties.

Since Roatan is an island, there is absolutely no railway service here, and it is impossible to arrive by train. The railway network in Honduras itself is also extremely limited and is not used for passenger transport to the coast.

Tourists who prefer ground travel are advised to consider bus options to ferry crossings or choose a direct flight, as the train is not an available mode of transport in this region.

There is no direct bus service to the island due to its geographical location; however, buses are actively used to reach the ferry departure port. Travellers usually make their way to the city of La Ceiba on the mainland of Honduras, from where Galaxy Wave speedboats operate regularly.

The bus journey to the coast may take several hours depending on the departure point, but it is an excellent way to view the country's scenic landscapes. Upon arrival at the port, a transfer to water transport will be required, which will deliver you to Roatan in approximately 1.5 hours.

Reaching the resort by car is only possible in combination with a ferry crossing. You must drive to the ferry terminal in the city of La Ceiba, where you can leave your vehicle in a guarded car park or transport it to the island on a cargo ferry.

On the island of Roatan itself, a car or taxi are convenient means of transport. Taxis here operate on fixed tariffs or by negotiation, while renting a car will allow you to freely explore remote beaches and hidden coves at your own pace.

When planning a trip to Roatan, it is useful to know a few local specifics that will make your holiday comfortable and safe. Here is a list of practical recommendations for tourists:

1. Clothing and Protection. The climate here is hot and humid, so pack light modest clothing made from natural fabrics. Be sure to stock up on insect repellents, as sandflies can be active on the beaches.
2. Transport on the Island. Water taxis are convenient for moving between beaches. For land journeys, it is better to agree on the price with the driver of a regular taxi before the trip begins.
3. Currency. The local currency is the Lempira, but US Dollars are accepted almost everywhere. It is recommended to carry small denominations for gratuities and purchases in small shops.
4. Language. Although the official language of Honduras is Spanish, on Roatan most locals speak English fluently due to the island's historical heritage.
5. Safety. The island is considered safe for tourists, but one should not leave belongings unattended on the beach. Avoid unlit areas at night.
6. Water and Hygiene. It is strongly advised not to drink tap water. Purchase bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth.
7. Ecology. Roatan is famous for its reefs. Please use coral-safe sunscreen and never touch marine life while diving.
