Several seasons can be distinguished in Hong Kong. Summer, lasting roughly from May to September, is hot and humid, with average temperatures around 28°C and significant rainfall – this is the peak of the rainy season, when the number of rainy days can reach 28 per month. Autumn (October-November) brings drier and sunnier weather with comfortable temperatures. Winter (December-February) is mild here and is the driest period, with the average temperature holding around 16-17°C. Spring (March-April) is characterized by gradual warming and increasing humidity, heralding the arrival of the rainy period.

The temperature regime in Hong Kong is characterized by noticeable seasonal changes, with the annual range of average temperatures fluctuating from approximately 16.3°C to 28.8°C. The hottest months are traditionally July, with an average temperature of 28.8°C and maximums reaching 30.7°C, and August, where the average temperature is 28.4°C. The coolest weather sets in during January, when the average temperature drops to 16.3°C and the minimum can reach 13.4°C, and in December with an average value of 16.9°C.

The summer period in Hong Kong, covering the months from May to September, is distinguished by hot and humid weather. Daily average temperatures at this time consistently stay above 26°C, and in July and August often exceed 28°C. Daytime highs regularly rise above 30°C, creating a sensation of true tropical heat, exacerbated by high humidity due to the large number of rainy days. Nights also remain very warm, with minimum temperatures rarely dropping below 24-26°C, ensuring insignificant daily temperature fluctuations during this period.

Winter in Hong Kong, falling on December, January, and February, offers significantly more mild and comfortable temperature conditions. Average temperatures in these months fluctuate in the range of 16-17°C. During the day, the air usually warms up to a pleasant 19-20°C, and at night the temperature drops to 13-15°C. Although these are the coolest months of the year, real frosts do not occur here. Daily temperature fluctuations in winter are somewhat more pronounced than in summer, but overall the weather remains mild and relatively dry, making this season attractive for many travellers.

In Hong Kong, a clearly defined seasonality in precipitation distribution is observed throughout the year. One can clearly distinguish a wet season, characterized by frequent rains, and a relatively dry period with minimal precipitation. Given the warm climate, precipitation here falls predominantly as rain; snow is untypical for Hong Kong.

The rainy season in Hong Kong usually lasts from May to September. During this period, the number of rainy days increases sharply. August is one of the wettest months, with an average rainfall of 11 mm and an impressive 28 rainy days. A very similar picture is observed in June, where 10 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days also reaches 28. May, July, and September are also distinguished by high humidity: in May, 8 mm of precipitation and 22 rainy days are recorded, in July – 8 mm and 25 days, and in September – 8 mm and 21 days. This indicates that in summer, it rains very often.

The dry season falls on the period from November to February. In these months, the amount of precipitation and rainy days decreases significantly. December is the driest month of the year – on average, precipitation is absent this month (0 mm), and there are only about three rainy days. January (1 mm of precipitation, 4 rainy days) and November (2 mm of precipitation, 6 rainy days) are also characterized by minimal precipitation. February and March, with 2 mm of precipitation but with an increase in the number of rainy days to 7 and 12 respectively, mark a gradual transition from the dry season to a wetter period.

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Hong Kong, it is important to consider its subtropical climate with distinct seasonality. In summer, from May to September, hot and very humid weather with frequent rains awaits you. Therefore, the basis of your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable fabrics – cotton, linen. Be sure to take a sturdy umbrella or raincoat with you, as in June and August the number of rainy days can reach 28. Don't forget sunscreen with high SPF, a hat, and sunglasses; even on cloudy days, UV radiation can be strong. Comfortable, waterproof shoes will be your best friend for walking around the city, which is often wet.

Winter in Hong Kong (December-February) is much milder and drier, with average temperatures around 16-17°C. At this time, layered clothing will come in handy: t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, a light sweater or fleece jacket, as well as a windbreaker or a not-too-warm jacket, especially for evening walks or visiting higher points where it can be windy. Although December is the driest month, a light umbrella may still be useful. Spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) are transitional seasons. It can be quite warm during the day, and cooler in the evenings. The layering principle is also relevant here. In the spring months, the number of rainy days begins to grow, so an umbrella and a light waterproof jacket will again become your companions.

Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are always relevant for Hong Kong, as the city encourages long walks and exploration of its numerous districts. A power outlet adapter (Hong Kong uses the British Type G) and a portable charger will also be very useful. Given the high humidity in summer, it might be worth bringing quick-drying clothes.
