General Weather Overview
The climate of Shenzhen is of a subtropical monsoon type. This means that summer here is hot and very humid, with frequent rains, while winter is mild and relatively dry. The city enjoys sufficient warmth year-round, but it is the summer months that are characterized by peak humidity and the highest number of rainy days.
Shenzhen has two distinct main seasons. The summer period, which lasts roughly from May to September, is distinguished by heat and high humidity: average temperatures range from 26.5°C to 28.9°C. This is also the rainy season, when the number of rainy days can reach 22-28 per month, bringing frequent, though not always voluminous, precipitation. Winter, from December to February, offers mild and drier weather with average temperatures around 16-17°C and significantly fewer rainfall and rainy days.
Spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) serve as pleasant transitional periods. During this time, the air temperature is comfortable, and the number of rainy days is moderate, making these seasons attractive for visiting. Overall, Shenzhen is suitable for a visit at any time of the year, but your choice will depend on your preferences regarding temperature and humidity levels.
Temperature
Shenzhen is characterized by a warm climate throughout the year, however, temperature patterns change noticeably depending on the season. The annual temperature trend shows that the hottest months are July and August, when the average daily temperature reaches 28.9°C and 28.5°C respectively, and maximum values regularly exceed 30-31°C. The coolest months are considered to be January and December with average temperatures around 16.1°C - 16.5°C, while minimum night-time temperatures can drop to 12.7°C - 13.0°C.
The summer period in Shenzhen, which gains strength from May and lasts through September, is characterized by consistently high temperatures and significant humidity. Already in May, the average temperature reaches 26.5°C, and in peak months (June-August), average maximum temperatures hold in the range of 30-31°C, while average minimums rarely fall below 25-26°C. This creates a sensation of sultry, stifling weather, especially when combined with a high number of rainy days. The difference between day and night temperatures in summer is relatively small, averaging 4-5°C, which is typical for a humid subtropical climate in this season.
Winter in Shenzhen, from December to February, offers significantly more mild and comfortable temperature conditions. Average daytime temperatures range from 19.5°C in January to 21.0°C in February, while night-time temperatures drop to 12.7°C - 14.2°C. Although frosts are extremely rare, evenings and nights can be quite cool. In the winter months, a more noticeable diurnal temperature amplitude is observed compared to summer – the difference between maximum daytime and minimum night-time readings can reach 6-7°C, making morning and evening hours noticeably fresher. The transitional seasons – spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) – are distinguished by pleasant warmth, with average temperatures from 21°C to 26.5°C, gradually rising in spring and falling in autumn.
Precipitation
In Shenzhen, distinct precipitation seasonality is observed, with a clear division into wet and dry periods. The rainy season usually covers the months from May to September, bringing the bulk of annual precipitation and the highest number of rainy days. The dry season, conversely, falls in late autumn and winter, roughly from November to February, when rainfall decreases significantly.
The wettest months in Shenzhen are June and August. During these periods, the highest amount of precipitation is recorded (on average 11 mm for the entire month) and the maximum number of rainy days – up to 28 days per month. This means it rains very frequently, practically daily. Although the total monthly rainfall amount might not seem very large, its high frequency makes these months the "wettest". May, July, and September are also characterized by a high frequency of rains (22-25 rainy days) with a total precipitation volume of about 8 mm per month. Overall, the summer season is distinguished by constantly rainy weather, which contributes to high air humidity.
The driest month of the year is December, when precipitation tends toward zero (0 mm) and there are only about 3 rainy days. January (1 mm of precipitation, 5 rainy days) and November (2 mm of precipitation, 6 rainy days) are also distinguished by a minimal amount of rain. In these months, precipitation is rare and, as a rule, insignificant. Transitional months, such as March (3 mm, 12 rainy days), April (4 mm, 13 rainy days), and October (4 mm, 9 rainy days), show a moderate amount of precipitation, smoothly shifting weather conditions from the dry season to the wet and back.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Shenzhen, it is important to consider its subtropical monsoon climate, which ensures warmth year-round but with pronounced seasonal changes in humidity and precipitation. Regardless of the time of your visit, comfortable walking shoes will be your best companion, as the city is conducive to long walks. It is also recommended to always have sunscreen with you, even on cloudy days. The principle of layering in clothing will be useful, especially in the transitional seasons and winter, when daytime and evening temperatures can differ noticeably.
The summer months, from May to September, in Shenzhen are characterized by high temperatures (averaging 26-29°C) and significant humidity, as well as frequent rains – be prepared for 22-28 rainy days per month. During this period, pack light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Be sure to take an umbrella or a light raincoat with you, as downpours can be sudden. Do not forget a head covering for sun protection and, perhaps, a waterproof bag for electronics.
Winter, from December to February, in Shenzhen is mild, with average temperatures around 16-17°C and significantly less precipitation. You will need light sweaters, jumpers, long-sleeved t-shirts, and a light jacket or windbreaker, especially for evening walks when the temperature can drop to 12-14°C. Jeans or thick trousers will be appropriate. In spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November), the weather is comfortable and warm; layered clothing will also come in handy here to adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, as well as a light jacket in case of rain, the amount of which is moderate during these periods.
