Current Weather

Planning a visit to Tsing Yi? In this section, you will find the most up-to-date weather information and detailed forecasts to help you perfectly plan your trip around Hong Kong.

Overview

Tsing Yi, like all of Hong Kong, is influenced by a subtropical monsoon climate. This means travelers can expect a distinct change of seasons: from mild and dry winters to hot and humid summers. Proximity to the sea plays a key role, softening temperature fluctuations and providing a fresh breeze even during the warmest months.

Throughout the year, the weather ranges from pleasantly cool in winter to tropically hot in summer. Spring and autumn are considered transitional seasons and often provide the most comfortable conditions for excursions and outdoor walks. High humidity is a hallmark of the local climate, especially during the monsoon season, giving the island its evergreen and blooming appearance.

The total annual rainfall is significant, but rain is distributed unevenly. Most precipitation falls during the warm season, while winter remains mostly sunny and clear. This variety of weather conditions makes the region interesting to visit at any time of year, depending on your holiday preferences.

Temperature

The temperature range in Tsing Yi varies from moderately cool to truly tropical. January and February are the coldest months of the year, with average daytime temperatures around +19...+20°C, and nights dropping to +13°C. This refreshing time is perfect for active tourism without the exhausting heat.

With the arrival of summer, the situation changes drastically. In July and August, the thermometer consistently stays above the +30°C mark. Due to the proximity to water and high humidity, the temperature feels several degrees higher, creating a humid tropical atmosphere. During transitional periods, such as April or October, the weather remains very pleasant, with averages around +24...+26°C.

The sea water temperature off the coast of Hong Kong deserves special mention. The swimming season in the Tsing Yi area is most comfortable from May to October. During this time, the water warms up to an ideal +26...+29°C, making beach holidays and water sports extremely popular among residents and visitors alike.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Tsing Yi is highly seasonal. The rainy season begins in May and lasts until September, bringing about 80% of the annual moisture. During this period, the sky is often covered with heavy clouds, and the sun gives way to powerful tropical downpours, which, however, usually end quickly.

The wettest months are traditionally June, July, and August. During this time, the number of rainy days can reach 24–27 per month, and total rainfall often exceeds 300 mm. It is also worth considering the possibility of typhoons in late summer, which can bring gale-force winds and heavy rain characteristic of this part of Hong Kong.

In contrast, the winter period is remarkably dry. From December to February, rain is extremely rare—on average only 3–4 days a month—and the amount of precipitation is minimal. Snow is virtually impossible here, so winter is perceived as a long "velvet" season with clear skies and very low humidity.

In autumn, starting in October, the rains gradually taper off, giving way to stable and dry weather. This time is ideal for those who dislike excessive humidity and prefer clear sunny days for exploring outdoor attractions.

Packing Tips

When packing for Tsing Yi, it is important to stick to the principle of layering. For the winter period (December–February), light sweaters, windbreakers, or thin coats are ideal, as evenings in Hong Kong can be quite cool. In spring and autumn, cotton shirts, T-shirts, and light trousers or jeans are the best choice.

A summer wardrobe should consist of the lightest possible clothing made from natural fabrics to comfortably handle high humidity and heat. Don't forget to pack sunglasses, a hat, and high-quality SPF cream. It is also worth noting that air conditioning in shopping centers and transport works very intensively, so a light cardigan or scarf will come in handy even in the middle of summer.

Be sure to bring comfortable shoes for long walks and a compact umbrella or raincoat, especially if your visit falls between May and September. If you plan to relax by the water in the summer months when the sea temperature reaches its peak, don't forget swimwear and insect repellent for evening nature walks.
