General Weather Overview

The climate of Tehran can be described as continental with semi-arid characteristics, especially during the summer period. The city experiences four distinct seasons: you can expect relatively cold winters, hot and very dry summers, as well as pleasant transitional periods in spring and autumn, which are considered the most comfortable for visiting.

The summer months, especially from June to August, are distinguished by high temperatures, with averages hovering around 25-28°C, and daytime highs often exceeding 30-33°C. This period is also characterized by minimal precipitation, often approaching zero, making summer in Tehran very sunny and dry. Winter (December-February) brings coolness with average temperatures around 0°C, sometimes dropping below freezing, and low amounts of precipitation. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are times of milder and more changeable weather, with comfortable temperatures for walking and exploring the city, although rain is possible in spring and late autumn.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Tehran is characterized by significant seasonal fluctuations throughout the year. The hottest month is traditionally July, when the average air temperature is about 28.0°C, and daytime highs can reach 33.8°C. June and August are also very warm, with average values of 25.1°C and 26.6°C respectively. Conversely, the coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to -0.2°C, and nighttime lows can reach -5.3°C. December and February are also cool, with average temperatures of 2.5°C and 1.3°C respectively.

Summer months in Tehran, from June to August, are characterized by a dry and hot climate. Daytime air temperatures often rise above 30°C; for example, in June the average maximum is 31.4°C, and in August — 32.3°C. Nights bring some relief but remain warm: the average minimum in July is 22.1°C. Winter, from December to February, brings coolness to the city, and at times, sub-zero temperatures. In January, the average maximum daytime temperature is only 4.9°C, and nighttime frosts are not uncommon. It is slightly warmer in February, with daytime highs around 6.6°C and nighttime lows in the region of -4.0°C.

Tehran's climate is characterized by noticeable diurnal temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The difference between day and night temperatures is often 10-12°C. For instance, in April, the average maximum reaches 18.5°C, while the average minimum drops to 6.9°C. A similar pattern is observed in autumn: in October, the air warms up to an average of 20.5°C during the day and cools down to 9.9°C at night. These variations make evenings and nights fresher even after hot summer days and require an appropriate approach to clothing choices, especially during the transitional seasons.

Precipitation

Tehran is characterized by very low rainfall throughout the year, with a clearly defined dry season. The highest amount of precipitation, although quite modest, falls during the period from January to April. Summer months, conversely, are distinguished by extreme dryness, while autumn brings a slight increase in humidity before the onset of winter.

The "wettest" months, despite the general aridity of the climate, can be considered January, February, March, and April, when an average of 2 mm of precipitation falls. At the same time, March stands out with the highest number of days with precipitation — about 10 days. Given the winter temperatures, especially in January (average temperature -0.2°C, minimum -5.3°C), February (average 1.3°C, minimum -4.0°C), and December (average 2.5°C, minimum -2.5°C), precipitation during these periods often falls as snow or wet snow. With the arrival of spring and rising temperatures, this is predominantly rain.

The summer period, from June to September, is extremely arid. In June, July, August, and September, precipitation amounts to 0 mm. August is an absolutely dry month, without a single day of precipitation. In June, July, and September, only one day is recorded when minor precipitation is possible. This means that rain in the summer in Tehran is a great rarity. In autumn, the situation changes slightly: in October, about 1 mm of precipitation falls over approximately 4 days, and in November the amount of precipitation remains at the level of 1 mm, but the number of days with it increases to 7. Precipitation at this time of year usually takes the form of light or short-term rains.

What to Pack

When packing for Tehran, it is important to consider significant seasonal weather fluctuations. Winter months (December-February) are quite cold here: the average temperature holds around -0.2°C to 2.5°C, and nighttime lows can drop to -5.3°C. During this period, you will need warm clothes: a winter jacket or coat, sweaters, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Although there is little precipitation (about 1-2 mm per month), it may come in the form of snow, so waterproof footwear would be useful. Early spring, especially March, still requires warm clothing, as the average temperature is about 7°C, and the number of days with precipitation can reach ten.

From April to May and in the autumn months (September-November), the weather in Tehran becomes milder, but the principle of layering in clothing remains relevant due to the difference between day and night temperatures. In spring, average temperatures range from 12.7°C in April to 18.1°C in May, and in autumn – from 22.6°C in September to 7.5°C in November. A light jacket, jumper, t-shirts, and comfortable trousers will be a good choice. Do not forget an umbrella in case of rain, especially in spring and late autumn, when the number of days with precipitation varies from 4 to 7. Summer (June-August) in Tehran is very hot and dry: average temperatures reach 25-28°C, and daytime highs often exceed 30-33°C, with precipitation being practically absent. During this period, it is worth opting for light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, as well as definitely taking a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen. Regardless of the season, comfortable shoes for long walks around the city are your main companion.
