What to Do

Inside Kilkenny Castle, guests will find magnificently restored halls where every piece of furniture and decorative element tells the story of the Irish nobility's life. Special attention should be paid to the Long Gallery with its impressive vaulted ceiling and collection of family portraits, as well as the luxurious state rooms.

Art lovers should definitely visit the local art gallery, which exhibits works by both classical European and contemporary Irish masters. The castle often becomes a venue for temporary exhibitions and cultural festivals, making every visit unique.

The grounds surrounding the castle deserve no less attention. The vast park with manicured lawns and shaded alleys is an ideal place for leisurely strolls and striking photographs. For families, interactive programs are provided that introduce children to the history of the fortress in a fun way.

Getting There

Since the castle is located in the heart of Kilkenny, it is very easy to reach. The main entrance is located on The Parade. If you are arriving from other regions of the country, it is most convenient to use rail transport or intercity buses — the station is within walking distance of the fortress walls.

For those who prefer traveling by car, there are several city parking lots nearby. You can also easily call a taxi within the city, although a walk through the historic streets from the central square to the castle gates takes only a few minutes and offers many pleasant impressions.

History & Facts

The history of this site began as early as the 9th century with the construction of a fortified estate for the O’Carroll clan. However, the first stone castle, which formed the basis of its current grandeur, was erected in 1195 by order of William Marshal, the 1st Earl of Pembroke. For six centuries, the castle served as the main residence of the powerful Butler family, who exerted an enormous influence on the destiny of Ireland.

The architecture of the building has undergone many changes: from a stark medieval square fortress with massive corner towers to a more elegant palace complex. A significant mark was left on the castle's appearance by the siege by Oliver Cromwell's forces, which resulted in part of the walls being destroyed, subsequently leading to a redesign of the interior space.

A new chapter in the life of the landmark opened in 1967 when Arthur Butler, the 6th Marquess of Ormonde, handed over the ancestral home to the city for a symbolic fee of £50. After extensive restoration, Kilkenny Castle opened its doors to travelers from all over the world, becoming a national treasure.

Time Needed

To explore the interiors at a leisurely pace, browse the gallery, and enjoy a walk through the adjacent park, visitors usually need between 1.5 and 3 hours. If you plan to take an extended guided tour or have a picnic on the lawn, it is worth setting aside half a day.

The castle is a popular destination, so during peak tourist seasons, your stay might be slightly longer due to queues. In any case, there is no need to rush — every hall and garden path deserves careful exploration.
