Built at the end of the 15th century, Ross Castle was the ancestral home of the powerful O’Donoghue clan. Many legends and tales are associated with its walls. One of the most famous says that the castle's founder, O’Donoghue Mór, sleeps at the bottom of the lake and every seven years, on the first morning of May, he rides around his domain on a white horse. It is believed that anyone who sees him will be happy for the rest of their life.
Today, Ross Castle is more than just a historical site; it is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can take a tour of the restored rooms, furnished with 16th and 17th-century pieces, and enjoy stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Its scenic location makes it an ideal spot for walks and a starting point for boat tours of the Lakes of Killarney.
