About

On the banks of the scenic Namgang River in the city of Jinju lies Namgaram Park—a picturesque recreational space where nature harmoniously intertwines with a rich historical heritage. South Korea is famous for its riverside parks, but Namgaram holds a special place among them due to its location directly opposite the legendary Jinju Fortress.

The park, spanning about three kilometers, was designed as a "cultural street" intended to introduce guests to the traditions and spirit of the region. It is an ideal place for those seeking solitude among bamboo groves or wanting to touch history through numerous monuments and sculptural compositions.

As part of the "Enagi" walking route, Namgaram Park is considered a "true" reflection of Jinju. Here, you can not only enjoy the fresh river breeze but also see how modern city life coexists with ancient pavilions reflected in the calm waters of the river.

What to Do

A walk through Namgaram Park offers many interesting activities. Be sure to stroll along the "Namgaram Starry Path" (Namgaram Byeolbitgil)—an atmospheric walkway through a bamboo grove that transforms in the evening with spectacular lighting, creating the feeling of walking under a night sky.

The central point of the park is Millennium Square, featuring an original fountain and the monumental sculpture "New Light." For art lovers, themed zones have been established here: the Sculpture Garden, the Music Garden, and the Painting Garden. Each is filled with objects that tell the story of Jinju's cultural code.

For photographers and fans of aesthetics, the park offers the best vantage point for Jinju Fortress and the famous Chokseongnu Pavilion. From here, the entire architectural ensemble is visible, allowing you to appreciate its grandeur against the river backdrop. If your trip coincides with October, you will witness the grand Lantern Festival, when thousands of lights are launched onto the water right by the park's shores.

Getting There

Namgaram Park is located in the central Manggyeong-dong district of Jinju, on the southern bank of the Namgang River. Its territory covers the area between the Jinyang and Cheonsu bridges, making it easily accessible from the central part of the city.

The most pleasant way to reach it is on foot. The park is part of the "Enagi" cultural walking route, which connects the city's key historical points. If you are near Jinju Fortress, you only need to cross the bridge to find yourself in the shaded alleys of the park.

For those who prefer comfort, a taxi is an excellent option, as it can take you directly to one of the park entrances. Jinju's public transport is also well-developed, with buses crossing the Jinju or Jinyang bridges stopping within walking distance of the park area.

History & Facts

One of the park's most valuable historical elements is its bamboo grove. For centuries, city residents have carefully protected this natural site, considering it a symbol of spiritual purity and resilience. In ancient times, it was believed that this place possessed a special energy, attracting rare birds whose flocks circled over the bamboo tops.

The creation of the park's modern appearance was an important part of a large-scale cultural heritage restoration project. The main idea was to create a space where the past meets the future. This is why there are so many sculptures dedicated to the patriotism and resilience of local residents during historical trials, including the Imjin War.

The park's shore offers a unique perspective of Jinju Fortress. It is said that from here, its architectural form, resembling a giant dragon, is most visible. The pavilions and rocks on the opposite bank come together to form the image of a mythical creature, with the Namgang River playing the role of its long, curved tail.

Time Needed

A leisurely walk along the main alleys to enjoy the panoramic river views usually takes about 1.5–2 hours. This is quite enough time to explore the bamboo grove and several themed gardens.

If you plan to explore each zone in detail, including Millennium Square and the Sculpture Garden, and take beautiful photos of the fortress at sunset, it is better to set aside 2–3 hours. For those who enjoy an evening stroll, about an hour is enough to walk along the illuminated "starry path."

Working Hours

Namgaram Park is hospitably open to visitors 24/7. You can come here for an early morning run or enjoy a late walk in the silence of the bamboo forest.

Despite being accessible at any time, the park becomes most impressive after sunset when the illumination is turned on. Before planning your visit, it is recommended to check the city's official website for seasonal festivals that might change the usual rhythm of the park area.
