Nosy Be

Getting There: Introduction

Nosy Be is a picturesque archipelago and a premier resort hub located off the northwest coast of Madagascar, renowned for its pristine beaches and ylang-ylang plantations. If you are planning a visit to Nosy Be, it is essential to study the logistics in advance, as its island location requires careful route planning. We have compiled up-to-date information on how to reach Nosy Be using international and domestic flights, or a combination of land and water transport.

By Plane

The most convenient and fastest way to reach the resort is by air. The island has its own international airport, Fascene, which handles both domestic and international flights.

Travelers can choose a direct flight from certain European cities (such as those in Italy or France) or from neighboring Indian Ocean islands. A route with a layover in the country's capital, Antananarivo, is also popular. Regular domestic flights connect Madagascar's main city with Nosy Be, allowing tourists to reach their destination in just one hour.

By Train

There is no direct railway connection to the island of Nosy Be. This is due to the geographical location of the resort, which is separated from the mainland by a strait, and the lack of railway infrastructure on the island itself.

The railway network of Madagascar is underdeveloped and limited to a few lines in the central and eastern parts of the country. These routes do not reach the northern regions. Even major cities on the "mainland" located relatively close to the archipelago, such as Antsiranana, do not have access to railway tracks. Therefore, the train is not a suitable option for traveling to this part of the country.

By Bus

Since Nosy Be is an island, traveling by bus involves a combined route that invariably leads to the port of Ankify on the "mainland," from where speedboats ferry tourists to their destination. The most popular and scenic route begins in the city of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez): a journey of about 250 kilometers usually takes between 5 to 7 hours, depending on the type of vehicle.

More resilient travelers choose routes from the eastern regions, for example, from Sambava or Maroantsetra, although the latter option is suitable only for true adventure seekers due to the difficulty of the roads. The distance from Sambava is approximately 450 kilometers, and such a trip will require a full daylight day, allowing you to enjoy the changing landscapes of northern Madagascar.

By Car

As Nosy Be is an island, any car journey ends at the port of Ankify on the mainland, where you must transfer to a ferry or boat. The most popular and scenic route runs from the city of Antsiranana: the road is about 250 kilometers long along the RN6 highway and takes an average of 5–6 hours. For a comfortable trip, tourists often rent a 4x4 vehicle with a driver, which costs approximately 50–70 Euros per day, excluding fuel.

A longer journey awaits those departing from the "vanilla capital" of Sambava: covering the distance of 460 kilometers will take the entire daylight day, about 9–12 hours, depending on the road conditions. The route from the city of Maroantsetra is considered a true expedition for experienced travelers in Madagascar: the path spans over 900 kilometers through challenging sections and may take several days, requiring a reliable four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Travel Tips

A trip to the sunny island of Nosy Be will be an unforgettable adventure if you prepare for local specifics in advance. We have compiled a list of useful recommendations to help you feel confident and comfortable during your holiday in Madagascar.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. The climate on the island is tropical, hot, and humid, so prefer loose-fitting clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton and linen. Be sure to bring high-quality sunglasses, a hat, and high-SPF sunscreen. For evening walks, a light long-sleeved shirt is useful for protection against insects.
  2. Transport. The most popular and affordable way to get around the island is by tuk-tuks (locals call them "bajaj"). You must agree on the fare with the driver in advance, before boarding. For independent exploration of beaches and attractions, you can rent a scooter or quad bike, but please exercise caution on the roads.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Malagasy Ariary. Although Euros may be accepted in some tourist spots, the exchange rate will be unfavorable. It is better to exchange money at the airport or a bank. Bank cards are not accepted everywhere, so always carry a supply of cash, especially small denominations for gratuities and market purchases.
  4. Health and Safety. Drink exclusively bottled water and use it even for brushing your teeth. Avoid beverages with ice in street cafes. The island is safe for tourists, but basic precautions are advisable: do not leave valuables unattended on the beach and avoid wearing expensive jewelry while walking.
  5. Communication. The main languages of communication are Malagasy and French. English is understood in major hotels and diving centers, but outside of these areas, it is not widely spoken. Learning a few phrases in French or downloading an offline translator will greatly facilitate communication with taxi drivers and vendors.
  6. Local Etiquette. The island's main motto is "mora-mora," which means "slowly-slowly." Do not get irritated if service in a restaurant seems leisurely; here, it is customary to enjoy the moment. Greet locals with a smile and always ask for permission before taking their photograph.
  7. What to Avoid. It is strictly not recommended to buy souvenirs made of coral, turtle shells, or animal skins. Their export is strictly prohibited by law, and attempting to take such items across the border carries the risk of serious fines or imprisonment.
  8. Additional Tip. Keep the tide schedule in mind. The ocean at Nosy Be has very pronounced cycles: during low tide, the water can recede very far from the shore, making swimming impossible for several hours. Use this time for excursions inland or walks along the exposed seabed.

By following these simple tips, you can avoid minor inconveniences and fully immerse yourself in the relaxed atmosphere of this tropical paradise. May your holiday be filled only with positive emotions and bright discoveries!
