This modern attraction, brought to guests by Mexico, stands out for its responsible attitude toward nature. The establishment runs entirely on solar panels, and the restaurant menu features lionfish dishes—this is how the brewery helps combat invasive species to save the coral reefs. There is no pretense here, just authenticity, free Wi-Fi, and a sincere love for the craft.

Inside, guests will find a stylish interior decorated with deep-sea diving shots and an open kitchen featuring an authentic brick oven. Whether you are an experienced diver looking to relax after a swim or simply a lover of quality ale, Punta Sur Brewery offers the perfect spot to unwind, where even children and four-legged friends are welcome.

What to Do

The main reason to visit is, of course, tasting the fresh craft brews. Usually, there are 4 to 6 varieties on tap: from a light wheat beer with jamaica (hibiscus) and a refreshing blonde ale to a rich stout and aromatic IPA. If it's hard to choose just one, be sure to order a tasting flight to appreciate the full range of local flavors.

The culinary side of the establishment is just as impressive as the beer list. The pride of the kitchen is the thin-crust brick oven pizza. You must try the signature lionfish pizza with capers and garlic—it's not only delicious but also eco-friendly. Also worth noting are the traditional empanadas with various fillings, guacamole, and stuffed mushrooms with guajillo sauce.

For those who prefer something stronger, the bar offers original cocktails. Try the Mexican gin with raspberry or cocktails based on mezcal with lime. While waiting for your order, you can admire the stunning blackwater diving photos decorating the walls or chat with the owners, who often come out to the dining area to personally share the secrets of their production with guests.

Getting There

The brewery is easy to find: it is conveniently located in the very heart of the city at 10a Avenida Sur 229. If you are staying near the central square, Plaza del Sol, the walk to the brewery will take no more than 10–15 minutes at a leisurely pace through the picturesque streets.

For those arriving on cruise ships at the International Pier or Puerta Maya, a taxi is the best option. The ride takes about 5–10 minutes and costs an average of 50–100 pesos. You can also rent a golf cart or scooter, which are popular on the island, to combine your visit to the brewery with a tour of the Avenida Rafael Melgar waterfront.

If you prefer walking, the route from the port along the sea takes about 20–30 minutes. Head toward the intersection of 10th Avenue South with Rosado Sales and Calle 3. The building is easy to recognize by its cozy entrance and characteristic tropical atmosphere, and the space is fully wheelchair accessible.

History & Facts

The story of Cervecería Punta Sur began with the dream of two dive instructors, Ricardo Arellano and Adrienne Banca. While working with tourists from all over the world, they often heard their clients express a desire to try local, high-quality craft beer—which simply didn't exist on the island at the time. Joining forces with experienced brewer Dr. Michael Janssen, they decided to create the island's first microbrewery.

The path to opening was not easy: the founders experimented with home recipes for a long time and even traveled to Wyoming and Colorado to learn from American craft masters. Finally, in August 2017, the brewery officially opened its doors to its first guests, instantly becoming a landmark spot for the diving community and beer enthusiasts.

The owners' deep connection to the sea is also reflected in the establishment's ecological philosophy. Punta Sur Brewery actively uses solar panels for power and adheres to sustainability principles. One of its unique features is the inclusion of lionfish on the menu—an invasive species threatening local reefs. By harvesting them individually without nets, the team helps preserve the fragile ecosystem of the island's marine park.

Time Needed

To fully appreciate the selection at this local microbrewery, we recommend planning for about 1–2 hours. This is plenty of time to order a tasting flight of several beers, try the famous pizza, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the place.

If you plan to spend the evening here with a large group, order signature mezcal-based cocktails, and have a full dinner, it's worth setting aside 2–3 hours. The brewery is a great place to unwind after a busy day of diving or excursions, where time flies by during a pleasant conversation with the owners or while studying the underwater photography on the walls.

Punta Sur Brewery is open daily, allowing island guests to stop by any day of the week. The doors are open from noon until late evening, creating the perfect conditions for both an early lunch and a cozy end to the day.
