For the indigenous Maori people, Maungakiekie holds immense cultural and historical significance. In the past, its slopes were home to one of the largest fortified settlements (pa) in the region. Traces of terraces and food storage pits created by the Maori are still visible on the hill, serving as a reminder of its rich past. The name "One Tree Hill" refers to a lone tree (a Monterey pine, and earlier a tōtara) that long crowned the summit, becoming a symbol of this location.
Today, Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill is a popular place for walks and recreation among both locals and tourists. The hilltop offers breathtaking panoramic views of Auckland, its Manukau and Waitematā harbors, and the surrounding volcanic cones. The summit also features an obelisk and a statue dedicated to the founder of Auckland, Sir John Logan Campbell, who bequeathed this park to the city. It is a wonderful place to feel the spirit of history and enjoy the beauty of New Zealand's nature.
