About

The Hurtigruten Museum (Norwegian Coastal Express Museum) is a unique technical and historical complex in Stokmarknes, which is considered the birthplace of the famous sea route. Its most striking feature is a grand architectural solution: the authentic 1956 cruise liner MS Finnmarken is enclosed within a giant glass building that looks like a massive display case on the ocean shore.

Located in Norway, this museum offers visitors a journey through time. You can see how sea transport evolved, serving for decades as the only link between remote northern ports and the rest of the world. The exhibition combines the industrial power of the past with modern interactive technologies.

The museum is part of the prestigious Museum Nord network and is rightfully considered one of the country's most original attractions. In 2025, it was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award, confirming its significance not only as a repository of machinery but also as a cultural space telling the living stories of sailors, entrepreneurs, and everyday travelers.

What to Do

The main adventure at the museum is the opportunity to literally step on board the massive MS Finnmarken. You are free to explore the vessel: from the captain’s bridge and the chartroom to the (formerly) noisy engine room. Be sure to check out the galley and the post office, where mid-20th-century life has been recreated, and don't forget to take a photo with the retro 1971 Ford 17M car on the open deck.

The original interiors help you immerse yourself in the 1950s atmosphere. Visitors are invited to relax in the 1956 dining room, which retains the decor of the era, and try traditional drinks. For children, a special area in the lounge features toys from different decades, making the museum an excellent choice for a family outing.

Interactive exhibits designed by Kvorning Design tell stories of people whose lives were inextricably linked to the sea. You will encounter virtual projections of sailors and passengers, learn about the challenges of navigating Arctic waters, and see how Hurtigruten transformed life in coastal Norway. If you love technology and history, or are simply looking for inspiration while traveling through Lofoten, this museum will leave you with a wealth of impressions.

Getting There

The Hurtigruten Museum is located in the heart of the town on the waterfront at Richard Withs gate 1. The most atmospheric way to arrive is on a Hurtigruten liner itself, which makes a regular stop at the port, just a few minutes' walk from the museum entrance.

If you are traveling through the Vesterålen archipelago by car, follow the E10 highway, which connects the region's main settlements. Convenient parking for visitors is provided near the museum. Regional buses also run between towns, connecting Stokmarknes with Sortland and other points.

For those arriving from further away, the nearest air hub is Stokmarknes Airport (Skagen), located just 5 kilometers from the town. You can quickly reach the museum complex from the airport by taxi or local bus, making a visit convenient even for a short trip.

History & Facts

The town of Stokmarknes is rightfully considered the cradle of the legendary sea route. It was here in July 1893 that Captain Richard With founded the company whose ships became the "Number One Road" for all of Norway. For 130 years, this route has remained a vital artery connecting remote coastal settlements.

The museum's centerpiece is the MS Finnmarken liner, built in 1956 at the famous Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg. The vessel served passengers faithfully until 1993, after which it was preserved. Today, this giant is one of the world's largest museum objects, carefully maintained for future generations.

A modern chapter in the museum's history began on August 28, 2021, with the grand opening of a new futuristic building. The glass protective cocoon not only shields the vintage ship from the harsh northern climate but also turns it into a spectacular light installation on the ocean shore. The project gained international recognition and was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award 2025.

In addition to the 1950s vessel, the exhibition includes fragments of the DS Finnmarken steamship built in 1912. These elements allow visitors to compare the living conditions of sailors and the comfort of passengers across different eras, vividly demonstrating technical progress and changes in the culture of sea travel over a whole century.

Time Needed

To explore all the decks of the historic liner at a leisurely pace, study the interactive stands, and visit the engine room, most tourists need about 2–3 hours. The museum is quite large, so allow time to simply sit in the original interior of the wardroom and feel the spirit of the era.

If you plan to visit the museum with children or want to study the history of Hurtigruten in detail through all the multimedia exhibits, it is worth setting aside up to 4 hours for your visit. This will also allow you to relax in the local cafe and enjoy panoramic views of the fjord through the building's glass walls.

Working Hours

The museum is open to visitors daily, making it easy to include in your Northern Norway travel itinerary. The schedule is consistent throughout the week:

Monday — Sunday: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please note that entry to the ship and the main halls stops shortly before closing, so it is best to arrive in the first half of the day.
