Overview

The climate in Sur can be described as hot and arid, typical of the coastal areas of the Arabian Peninsula. Thanks to its proximity to the sea, there are no extreme temperature fluctuations characteristic of desert regions further inland. The weather in Oman in this part of the coast remains stable, sunny, and predictable almost all year round.

Although there is no sharp change of seasons, the year can be roughly divided into hot and temperate periods. Summer (from May to September) is marked by high temperatures, with the thermometer consistently staying above 30°C and peaking in June. Winter here is very mild and comfortable: from December to February, the air warms up to an average of 20–22°C, creating ideal conditions for excursions and outdoor activities without the exhausting heat.

A unique feature of the local climate is the extremely low amount of precipitation. Rain in Sur is a rarity, and even in the statistically "wettest" months, it is hardly felt. Tourists can confidently plan their trips without fear of prolonged downpours, as clear skies and plenty of sunshine are guaranteed at almost any time of year.

Temperature

The climate in the city of Sur is characterized by mildness in winter and significant heat in summer. The "coldest" months of the year are January and December, when the average air temperature stays at a very comfortable mark of around 20.5°C — 21.7°C. Winter here is more like a pleasant, mild summer: even on the coolest nights, the thermometer rarely drops below 18°C, making this time of year ideal for long walks and excursions.

With the arrival of summer, temperatures rise rapidly, peaking in June. During this period, the air warms up to an average of 32.0°C, and daytime highs often exceed 35.4°C. The summer heat in Sur is quite consistent: from May to August, average figures remain high, ranging from 30°C to 32°C. Travelers planning a visit during this time should be prepared for real Omani heat.

A characteristic feature of the local temperature regime is the slight difference between daytime and nighttime readings, which is likely due to the city's coastal location. For instance, even in the hottest month, June, the night temperature remains very high—around 28.6°C—hardly bringing any significant coolness after sunset. In winter, the difference is also small: daytime highs of 22-24°C are followed by nighttime lows of 18-19°C, creating a steady and predictable climatic backdrop.

Precipitation

Sur is characterized by an extremely arid climate, so precipitation is a rare and quite scarce occurrence. Throughout the year, the weather remains predominantly clear and sunny, making the city a predictable destination for beach holidays and sightseeing. Travelers don't need to worry about prolonged downpours, as there is simply no pronounced rainy season in this part of Oman.

Even in the months when the probability of precipitation statistically increases, the amount remains minimal. For example, in March and April, the highest number of "wet" days is recorded—about 3 per month—yet the total volume of precipitation barely reaches 1 mm. In winter, specifically in December and January, short and light rain is also possible (averaging 2 days per month), which quickly gives way to sunshine.

The summer period and early autumn are the driest times of the year. In June and September, the chance of precipitation is practically zero. In July and August, despite the heat, statistics may show 1–2 days of slight humidity, but this is more the exception than the rule. Overall, an umbrella is an accessory you are unlikely to need during your trip to Sur.

Packing Tips

Traveling to Sur requires preparation for the hot and sunny climate typical of this region of Oman. Your wardrobe should primarily consist of loose-fitting clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen in light shades. Given local cultural traditions, it is recommended to choose clothes that cover the shoulders and knees—this is not only a sign of respect but also the best protection from the scorching sun. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen, as the number of sunny days is high in every season.

Although the weather in Sur is warm year-round, night temperatures in the winter months (especially January and February) can drop to +18°C. For evening walks along the promenade or early morning excursions, it’s worth packing a light windbreaker, cardigan, or pashmina—layering will help you stay comfortable during temperature changes. Since precipitation is extremely rare and minimal here, you are unlikely to need an umbrella or raincoat.

For exploring the city and its surroundings, choose comfortable, well-worn shoes: light sneakers or securely fastened sandals are great for long walks. If you plan to spend time on the coast, don't forget your swimwear. Sur is a coastal city, so a light sea breeze can temper the heat, but remember that the sun remains active even in windy weather.
