How to get there: Introduction
By Plane
The fastest way to reach the islands is by air. The local airport Bocas del Toro (BOC) is located directly on the main island of the archipelago, Isla Colón, and is within walking distance of the city center. It receives regular flights, ensuring convenient connectivity with the mainland.
If direct tickets are unavailable, you can consider flying to nearby cities on the mainland, such as Changuinola or David. However, please note that an additional transfer will be required from these airports to the coast and the boat station.

By Bus
Traveling by bus is a popular and budget-friendly option for those who wish to see the landscapes of Panama. Most routes lead to the port city of Almirante, which serves as the main gateway to the Bocas del Toro archipelago.
Buses run regularly from the capital and other major cities in the region. Upon arrival in Almirante, passengers need to transfer to a water taxi (boat), which will take them directly to the main island in 30–40 minutes.
By Car
Traveling by car allows for flexible route planning but requires consideration of island logistics. The drive from the city of Changuinola takes about 2 hours, covering a distance of approximately 50 km. This is the shortest route for those located in the north of the country.
If you are departing from the city of David, be prepared to spend about 4.5 hours on the road, covering a distance of 197 km. It is important to remember that Bocas del Toro consists of islands, so your vehicle must be left at a paid guarded parking lot in the port of Almirante, or you will need to use a ferry to transport the car.
Travel Tips
To ensure your holiday in Bocas del Toro is as comfortable and carefree as possible, we have prepared a list of useful recommendations. These tips will help you adapt quickly to the local rhythm of life and avoid common issues.
- Clothing and Weather: The climate here is tropical and humid, and rain can start at any moment. Bring light, quick-drying clothing, swimwear, and definitely a light raincoat or umbrella.
- Water Transport: The main means of transport between the islands are water taxis (lanchas). Always negotiate the price in advance or check the fixed rates at the pier.
- Cash: Although major hotels and restaurants accept cards, cash (US Dollars) is required on smaller islands and in local shops. ATMs are available only on the main island, Isla Colón.
- Insect Protection: Be sure to carry repellent, especially if you plan to walk through the jungle or dine outdoors at sunset when sand flies (chitras) are active.
- Language Barrier: The official language is Spanish, but thanks to tourism and Caribbean influence, many locals speak English well.
- Drinking Water: It is not recommended to drink tap water. Purchase bottled water or use filters to avoid stomach issues.
- Island Time: Be prepared for the concept of "island time" — service in restaurants and transport departures may be leisurely. Relax and take your time.
- Environment: Please do not touch starfish with your hands and do not step on corals while snorkeling — the local ecosystem is very fragile.
Following these simple rules will make your stay on the archipelago safe and pleasant. Enjoy the Caribbean sun and the unique nature of Panama!
