Casa Museo Joaquín López Antay

About

In the heart of the city of Ayacucho lies a unique place where the history of one of Peru’s most vibrant symbols comes to life. The Joaquín López Antay House-Museum is not just an exhibition space, but the former home of an outstanding master who, in 1942, introduced the world's first modern Peruvian retablo.

The museum was officially opened in 2016 at the initiative of the great artisan's great-granddaughter. This space is designed to preserve the memory of the man who transformed traditional religious boxes into true works of art reflecting the social life and identity of the Peruvian people. Here, surrounded by family heirlooms, visitors can touch the living culture of the region.

What to Do

A visit to the museum offers guests a deep immersion into the world of the Ayacucho retablo. You can examine in detail the complex decorative dioramas that literally come to life thanks to hundreds of tiny hand-molded human and animal figures. Each piece is an entire story captured in wood and clay.

In the museum halls, visitors get acquainted with Joaquín López Antay's personal belongings and tools, learning about the intricacies of creating these unique works. Staff members often share family legends that help better understand the symbolism and meaning of each element of the exhibition.

For those who want to take a piece of Peruvian art home, there is a shop at the museum where you can buy original souvenirs and artisanal works at affordable prices. Sometimes, special retablo-making classes are held here, where you can try your hand at this traditional craft under the guidance of masters (the availability of such workshops should be checked in advance).

Getting There

The Joaquín López Antay House-Museum is conveniently located in the heart of the historical center at Cuzco 424. Thanks to its central position, it is within walking distance of most of the city's key tourist spots.

If you are walking from the main square (Plaza de Armas), the walk to the museum will take very little time. Strolling through the colonial streets with their characteristic architecture is a pleasant addition to your visit. For those who prefer comfort or are staying in more distant areas, you can use a local taxi—trips within the city center are usually inexpensive and take only a few minutes.

As the museum is located in a historical zone with narrow streets, it is recommended to use GPS or mobile apps for precise navigation. The colonial buildings typical of this part of the city, which are architectural monuments in themselves, can serve as a landmark.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked to a revolution in Peruvian art. Joaquín López Antay became the first folk artist in history to be awarded the National Culture Prize of Peru in 1975. This event caused a real stir in academic circles: until that moment, the prestigious award had been intended exclusively for graduates of official art schools. The debate between supporters of "academicism" and defenders of "folk art" forever changed the perception of traditional crafts in the country.

Master Antay became famous for radically transforming the traditional "San Marcos boxes," which previously had an exclusively religious purpose. He filled them with new themes, turning them into Ayacucho retablos. His first work in the new style was dedicated to the prison in the city of Huancavelica, where scenes of daily and social life were depicted instead of saints, which was an absolute innovation for the time.

Today, the museum, opened in 2016 at the initiative of his great-granddaughter Paty Mendoza López, preserves not only the master's tools and works but also the very atmosphere of the house where the new art was born. Joaquín's contribution was so significant that the Ministry of Culture established a special state prize in his name, which is awarded annually to the country's best artisans.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the exhibition and feel the atmosphere of the creative workshop, most visitors need between 45 and 60 minutes. This is quite enough time to study the displayed retablos, the master's personal belongings, and listen to the stories told by the museum's keepers.

If you plan to study the technique of creating miniature figures in detail or want to purchase souvenirs, it is worth setting aside slightly more than an hour for your visit. The museum is quite compact, so a visit can easily fit into a walking tour of the historical city center.

Working Hours

The museum warmly opens its doors to visitors throughout the week. You can plan your visit during the following hours: daily, from Monday to Sunday, the doors are open from 09:30 AM to 1:00 PM, and after the lunch break—from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Please note that the schedule may change on public holidays. Before visiting, it is recommended to check the museum's official social media pages to ensure the schedule is up to date.
