The Hipólito Unanue Museum (Museo Histórico Regional Hipólito Unanue) is the most significant cultural treasure in the city of Ayacucho, inviting visitors on a fascinating journey through the millennia. Located in the modern Simón Bolívar Cultural Center complex, this museum is the primary guardian of the region's archaeological and anthropological heritage, revealing the secrets of ancient Peruvian civilizations.

The main focus of the exhibition is the Wari culture — a powerful pre-Inca empire that flourished between the 7th and 10th centuries AD. The museum's halls showcase about 15,000 years of evolution: from the primitive stone tools of the first hunter-gatherers from the famous Pikimachay cave to exquisite Inca-era items. Here, you can see unique ceramics, ancient textiles, and massive stone monoliths.
In addition to its rich archaeological halls, the museum complex includes a library, an archive, and an unusual botanical garden featuring rare endemic cactus species. This makes the museum not just a repository of antiquities, but a multifunctional space where history is closely intertwined with nature and the contemporary art of local masters.
