Żegluga Ostródzko - Elbląska

About

Imagine a journey where your boat suddenly leaves the water's surface and begins to glide right across the green grass. Elbląg offers tourists a unique chance to witness this miracle firsthand. A cruise along the Elbląg Canal is not just a boat ride, but a journey through one of the most remarkable engineering monuments Poland has ever created.

The main feature of this 19th-century engineering masterpiece lies in its system of inclined planes (slipways). Thanks to them, vessels overcome elevation differences of up to 100 meters by moving overland on special rail platforms. The entire system runs on eco-friendly hydropower, making the canal a unique site on a global scale.

The route passes through picturesque areas, including Lake Drużno. This is not just a body of water, but a valuable ornithological reserve where you can encounter rare black storks and other amazing birds. Cruises are organized by the company Żegluga Ostródzko-Elbląska, providing comfort and audio guides in several languages.

What to Do

The main highlight of this cruise is the thrilling experience of crossing five slipways (inclined planes) in Kąty, Oleśnica, Jelenie, Całuny, and Buczyniec. Watching your vessel board a rail platform and start moving "overland" invariably delights passengers of all ages. This is a rare opportunity to see mechanisms in action that have remained unchanged for over 150 years.

While moving along the canal, be sure to step out onto the open deck. You can enjoy panoramic views of meadows and forests, as well as engage in birdwatching: Lake Drużno is famous for its abundance of rare birds. There is usually a bar on board where you can purchase drinks and snacks; however, for a long journey, experienced travelers recommend bringing a full lunch.

At the end of the long route — Buczyniec — be sure to visit the small thematic museum dedicated to the history of the canal. You can also relax in a local cafe there while waiting for the return bus. If you prefer shorter trips, choose cruises on Lake Drwęckie, which last less than an hour and allow you to enjoy the tranquility of the water and interesting stories from the audio guide.

Getting There

The main pier where water adventures begin is located in the very heart of the city at Wodna 1B. If you are coming from Gdańsk, it is most convenient to take the train: the journey to the Elbląg station takes about an hour, after which you can reach the embankment on foot or by taxi in a few minutes.

For those traveling by car, parking areas are provided near the pier. Coordinates of the starting point: 54.1577778, 19.3933333. Keep in mind that if your route ends at a different point (for example, in Buczyniec), the organizers usually provide a bus to return to the starting point in Elbląg, which is already included in the ticket price.

Elbląg is also easily accessible from other cities in Warmia and Masuria by intercity buses. The pier is located in a picturesque spot near Lake Drużno, so you can easily find it by following the Żegluga Ostródzko-Elbląska signs.

History & Facts

Construction of the Ostróda-Elbląg Canal began in the 1840s under the guidance of outstanding Prussian engineers. They faced an ambitious task: to connect the resource-rich Masurian Lakes with the Baltic Sea, while overcoming a significant elevation drop. The result was a unique project where a system of inclined planes (slipways) was used instead of traditional locks.

Regular navigation began here in 1852, when the first steamer passed between Iława and Karczemka. The engineering solution proved so reliable and perfect that the mechanisms, powered exclusively by hydropower (water wheels), still function today, attracting tourists from all over the world.

The landscape through which the canal passes is of glacial-moraine origin. The lakes that make up the region's water system were formed thousands of years ago, and today their total area reaches 310 km². The Elbląg Canal is harmoniously integrated into this natural environment, serving not only as a transport route but also as a monument to the harmony of technology and ecology.

Today, this site is recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of Poland. It remains a living open-air museum where you can see 19th-century technology in action, preserving the authentic atmosphere of old Europe.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy this unique experience, you will need at least half a day. A classic cruise along the Elbląg – Buczyniec route lasts about 4.5 hours, to which you should add time for the return transfer and a visit to the museum at the destination. In total, it’s best to set aside 6–7 hours for such a trip.

If your time is limited, the shipping company offers shorter sightseeing tours, such as around the lake or the pier. These excursions usually take 1 to 2 hours and are perfect for a first introduction to the Elbląg waters.

Working Hours

The information office and ticket counters operate daily, allowing tourists to plan their time flexibly. Opening hours: Monday – Sunday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Please note that the cruises themselves are seasonal. Navigation is usually open during the warmer months, so it is recommended to check the current cruise schedule on the official website before your trip, especially if you are planning a visit on a specific date in 2026.
